Tire Wear

My 06 2955RL has about 20,000 miles on it. The tires (Mission) on the rear axel are wearing more on the inside. The front axel tires are wearing normaly. Glenn, our tire guru if your out there, what's the reason for the tires wearing more on the inside and how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Jerry

Inside or outside shoulder wear is caused by a mis-alignment. You will need either an alignment or the axle is bent. Either way take it back to your dealer or preferably an alignment shop. I would suggest an alignment shop that works on trucks/trailers as an automotive alignment shop will not be able to help you. RV dealers, in all probability, will send you to an alignment shop but only after they run a bill up on you.

Just a note..tires wearing down the middle are over inflated and tires wearing on both shoulders at the same time are under inflated. Cuping is generally a balance problem.

Let us know how things worked out.

We have a 2002 Montana fifth wheel 2955
rl and had the same problem. Camber had gone out of the axles - This was a common problem for that period and Montana/ALKO replaced them at no charge. The standard axle was rated at 5500 lb each - not much lee way on a 10,000 lb trailer. I choose to use 7000 lb axles and have had no problem since. Look under the trailer - the axles should be higher in the center than at the ends - that is camber. If the axle is straight it has lost its camber. Head to your dealer.

We have a 2002 2955 RL Montana and had the same problem - turned out to be loss of camber in the axle. Montan replaced a lot of axles that year. Look under you unit from the rear - if the axle appears flat it has lost camber - head over to your dealer.

Our 2003 had the same tire problem and having the axles realigned fixed that problem. It cost me $75/axle.

Remember that on a 10,000 pound trailer, only maybe 7,500 to 8,000 pounds are on the axles. The rest is on the pin. 11,000 pounds of axle rating should be plenty.

Steve is right, I loaded my 2955RL up to 12300 pounds. 2600 on the pin 9700 on the axles.
This includes a full tank of fresh water which I don't usually travel with and a lot of other stuff I could do without. I was concerned this model did not have enough payload for me but I was wrong.
Only about 5000 miles on the trailer but absolutely no tire wear showing and I run a full 80 PSI. So far the Missions have been good and hold their pressure very well.

Thanks for the info. I'll find an alignment shop and take it in. This forum is great, with all the knowledge out there.
Thanks again,
Jerry
