Double Towing

Has anyone towed more than the stated second trailer weight of 3000#? I'm looking at about 4000#.

You should check with Montana to see how much you can tow safety behind a camper with a frame that is barely strong enough to hold the camper.

Double tow is not allowed in California. Don't know about AZ.

That said, people down the street from me towed a ski boat behind their Reflection 5th wheel which was pulled by a GM Duramax 3/4 T. Go figure.

I'm curious now as to if the law has changed in Cali.... I pulled doubles professionally into and out of California 1984 through 1988.

69I've been towing double for 3 years with no problems. I'm 69 feet long. I want to change my Aluma open trailer for an enclosed trailer. Montana specs say they have a 3000# towing rating.

Surprisingly enough it's allowed.

California

  • Triple Towing: Permitted
  • Maximum Vehicle Length (Including All Add-ons): 65 feet
  • Maximum Speed Limit for Towing Vehicles: 55 mph

It sure is *IF* you have a Class A CDL! Don't try it with your normal CA Class C drivers license.

I just checked the site Carl referenced. It looks like half the states allow double towing and half don’t. Be careful which route you take.
You can’t go into Washington I80 is going to be a problem you can’t go into Wyoming and I70 is a problem because you can’t go into Kansas.

I don't care about going to CA, WA or OR. I travel AZ, NV, UT, ID, WY, SD, CO and a couple others. Never had a problem.

Checking with the factory is will be a waste of time. They have already told you what they feel is the max…3,000lbs. I would be more concerned with the tongue weight of the second trailer than the overall weight. That’s a lot of weight bouncing up and down on the frame rails which are a long way from the axles. Think about how a lever works. You might speak with a competent custom trailer hitch company and see what they say.

I’ve never had a state inspection on my camper in 35 years. They are $20 so if I get caught I’m ahead of the game.

Some years ago I got a phone call from a friend that is a Border Patrol officer and he was asking if I could store a boat that a gentleman was trying to take to Alaska behind his FW. The amazing thing is he had towed it all the way from Medford, OR thru WA to the Lynden, WA border crossing. When he tried to enter BC they turned him around because doubles were not permitted. Met the guy and he never had a clue about towing doubles anywhere. Long story short I stored the boat for almost two years before he contacted me and got my address to send me the titles as he didn't want to return to haul the boat to AK. Sold the boat and sent him the funds less storage costs of $1000.

I never got my trailer inspected until Texas got smart and required proof of inspection before you could renew your registration. I suppose I could have taken a chance and ignored renewing the registration. Don’t know what the fine for that is.

Farm Trailer!

Bill - I'm guessing LEOs would have no sense of humor seeing a Texas Farm Trailer tag on the back of the Montana...

Actually they covered 3 bases with the same rule. You can't renew registration without proof of inspection. And you can't get the inspection without proof of insurance. So not a bad thing I guess.

But they created a huge problem with thousands of fake temporary dealer tags being sold by unlicensed "dealers". Now they are trying to fix that problem.
