Mexico RV,ing

Anyone out there go to Mexico with their rig? I've heard some really scary stories. I'd love to try the Pacific coast but I'm not looking for trouble.

For me, I'd have to leave my guns at home and I'm not willing to go down there without them. Canada probably yes, but Mexico, no. Will visit a couple border towns, but uncomfortable enough with that.

Yes but only the north end of Baja. We have a lot on the Sea of Cortez (San Felipe) on the north east side of the peninsula. We've traveled all over north Baja w/o issue and camped as far south as Ensenada on the pacific side and San Felipe on the Cortez side. Many folks don't even consider North Baja true Mexico but it has had its share of drug violence so as far as security goes it makes an excellent example. There really is little concern for somebody with good common sense and some street smarts. Most parts of Mexico are very safe and much like the US there are those areas where any person with a choice should avoid. Generally the further you get from the boarder the less likelihood of issues again common sense should prevail as that's not always the case but a strong generality. By far the biggest dangers are the roads themselves and simply driving on them. We cracked our frame on the SOB when we hit a pothole the size of a Honda Civic.

I'd recommend you jump on rv.net and check the "RVing in Mexico and South America" forum. There are some seasoned Mexico travelers on the board. Be careful not to start a flame war as several folks are very protective of Mexico as an RV destination (rightly so, the US media has painted a very poor picture).

It would present a major problem for us because we actually have more than one firearm. I guess someday if we feel we have traveled and seen everything in the good old U.S.A. we would consider taking RV to Mexico.

what you hear is crap from people who have not experienced mexico.

we've been going to mexico for the winter for the past 10 years....many people here have been coming for 20-25 years or longer.

if you want to try mexico go to san carlos on the west coast....easy to get to and you don't need a vehicle permit. then go to mazatlan.

I surely wouldn't go to missouri though.

John, my wife Kristi have been going to Mexico the last 4 years traveling to Puerto Penasco, also called Rocky Point, which is 65 miles across the border in Arizona. We stay at a full hook-up rv park right on the water at the head of the Sea of Cortez. Last year we stayed 7 weeks and plan on doing the same this year although we may also go to San Carlos.

We have never encountered a situation where we worried about our safety. While we are there, we travel all over the region and feel no different than traveling in a foreign city or areas in the states. Yes, there are problems as there are everywhere, but common sense still prevails. Ask questions from the people who actually have been there and not from people who have only read about Mexico in the news.

Our biggest problems generally are fuel (no ULSD diesel). Shopping is nearly the same, just different names although Sams Club, Walmart, and Safeway are there.

If you have guns, you absolutely do NOT cross the border with them. There are gunshops near most border towns that will store them for you if required.

The rv.net forum site is a good one to visit for info.

True, and based on personal experience, I try to avoid East St. Louis Ill, South Chicago and Hammond, Indiana, certain parts of New Orleans, Miami and Atlanta and other areas in this country. I had issues in Mexico in the 60's, and have too many wonderful places to go in this country to get me to go back where I've had issues.

Jim, I think I'd avoid North St. Louis County for awhile.

Know what you are saying Leonard but that's a small part of a big state. Never has been one of my travel destinations. I still wouldn't hesitate to go right by it on I-270. Jim

As long as you don't get a flat They used to say about Hammond, Indiana that if you got a flat on the interstate there you should see how far you could go on the rim.
