Smokey Mountain Roads
We are making plans for a trip to North Carolina and Tennessee in May of this year. There is one area where I'd like some information and advice. We will be staying at Creekwood Farms RV Park near Waynesville, NC and want to go from there over to Sieverville, Tennessee. Rather than going back through the GSM National Park we are considering going on up I-40 then around to Sevierville. One of my route planners suggests a "cut off" using TN 339 (Jones Cove Road). Does anyone have experience with this route? Unless I find confirmation that it is OK for towing a 34' fifth-wheel, we will take a bit longer route. I will appreciate any comments from anyone who has experience in this area.

David, I have traved from creekwood farms over to Sieverville many times, but have always went I-40 to 411 at newport. takes about an hour. 411 comes out right at Sieverville. Pulled my montana through there several times with no problem. most of 411 is 4 lane with about 8-10 miles 2 lane.

Thanks, Tom and Helen. Your responses will be very helpful to me. I am just in the early stages of planning and I'm not under any pressure. Just checking out things.
Helen, I'll piggy back on this to ask if you are staying on in the Hill Country after the Rally?

We go I-40 to 411 also. There is a short stretch of winding hilly road before it levels out and goes 4 lane. It is a good short cut if you take it easy through that part.

Sorry to say but ! 40 is closed due to a rock slide last fal and is not open yet,, we stay at creekwood a lot and i would call them as the rd is closed at exit 20 going north and that is the creekwood exit so its a double detour now as there was another slide later in the winter as my daughter in asheville reported as they went to pigion and its a long detour but hope to be open in the spring as they say but who knows;;;sailer

I-40 is scheduled to re-open in April. So unless something unforseen comes up you should be good to go in May. We are heading up that way in June ourselves.

Thanks, everyone. I did know about the slide on I-40, but hoped it would be open by mid May. We will be coming in from the southwest to Wayneville, so the I-40 won't affect our coming in. It's when we leave that we would hope to take I-40.
We'll stay in touch and keep our eyes open before we make final plans.

Hello all, here's the forum topic/posts for the rockslide that occurred late last year. Pay particular attention to Steve Reigle's post for a link on the story. Keeping in mind the story was posted in October and the work was expected to take 2 weeks to 2 months which means that this is probably taken care of by now.

Per Sailer's posts it would definitely be something to get confirmed.

I just checked the Citizen Times of Asheville, NC's website. I-40 is still on schedule to re-open in LATE April. Let's hope it stays that way. I'm very partial to that route.
