Any comments on a PT 50C portable surge protector or recommendations for a different one and where to get the best price?

Don't know where the best price is but I highly recommend this unit. It is well worth the money and the company is very good to deal with should you have any problems

We have been RVing for close to 20 years. We buy the individual surge suppressors that plug into the wall socket. We have them on every plug that has something with electronics in it. Microwave, TV, Fridge, etc. Once in 20 years we had a surge which the small individual ones worked. They take up no space, no need to secure them, and work with any AC power, shore or gen set. About $10 @ Lowes

How do you protect the air conditioners and converter???

The problem with this approach is that everything running 120V.(especially things with a circuit board) need protection from voltage surges that can happen anywhere. Things like air conditioners, refrigerators, power inverters, etc.

I bought it second hand off Ebay. I sold it to a friend and he had a problem with it so contacted them and was told to ship it to them. They replace it no charge. A great Product and a Great company to deal with. It will protect your whole 5th Wheel. It checks the power system before it allows any power into your 5th wheel.

I have one and everything Hookman wrote is true. Not mentioned is the lifetime warranty. If it fails, they replace it. One friend is on his fourth one. I just returned from a stay at a RV park notorious for low power. It saved me three times when the power dropped below 102V. A nuisance when the power goes away but much better for *ALL* my 120V devices.

Jim has a very valid point regarding the air conditioners. I would venture to guess that most damage to the electronic devices and electrical systems (particularly the air conditioners) in a rig are usually associated with low voltage situations and brownouts. Those devices may well protect your television and other items from minor surges, but if you have never had a problem in twenty years using those, then you should consider yourself very blessed. We have been in parks where high and low voltage problems arose and we were thankful that we had no potential for problems due to our EMS and our autoformer.

CW had a flyer out this week with 50amp SurgeGuard for $117.97, or the 50amp with total protection for $314.97. Pretty good discount off their regular price. We had the permanent one installed but a lot of folks like the plug in types.

If you don't want to add to the Anaconda shore power cord nor want the added investment of a lock to keep honest people honest from stealing it right off your power pedestal ... you may want to look into say a whole house hard wired surge suppressor like the Intermatic Panel Guard. (I think it's branded IG series now) It easily wires into your existing power panel in your fiver and can be mounted about anywhere nearby. Granted it doesn't have digital readouts, power shutoffs, and such, but I just wanted name brand reliable surge protection without all the bells and whistles.

Progressive portable, and has saved me several time with low power. Use a heavy duty bike cable lock wrapped around pedestal to prevent theft (hopefully).

Let us tell you our story of our 50amp Surge Guard Portable Protector from Camping World. Bought the Surge Gaurd after getting our converter fried at the ocean. Every time out there after it was hooked up to the pole and locked. Ahhhh feeling secure for years. Went to Lancaster CG for the MOC rally left for the day returned late....no air and lights so bright they blind you then no elec. then back on bright lights no elec. unpluged elec. everyone around no electric problem. Unpluged Surge Guard used friends 50 amp Progressive all back to normal. So Surge Guard protector was causing surges. Great... Went thru RV ..washer dryer combo, TV lift, and DVD player all fried. Called Surge Guard.. Not their problem out of warranty. Ended up RV insurance claim. Thought long and hard about replacing it with any surge protector. Afraid not to. Bought the 50 amp Lifetime Progressive but if u read the warranty it states not responsible for any financial loss of property but will replace surge protector if defective. Bottom line ...warranty is not that great!
