what do the different drains do? - Montana Owners Club

We have a 2007 3400RL. There are three drains that I can see from the outside-two below the water connection "compartment" and one at the rear of the coach on the under belly. I have asked the dealer three times what each does and have gotten at least three different answers. As we are about to move out of the coach and store it for short trips I need to drain everything. Would someone please enlighten me? TIA.

The ones in the compartment are low point drains for hot and cold water lines. The one underneath is low point drain for on-board fresh water. Drain ALL before winterizing!!

How about the hot water heater-any special way to drain it?

Remove anode rod (big plug at bottom of hot water heater). Seems like someone said it takes a 1 1/16 socket but I am not sure. Others have reminded to stand clear after cooling and depressurizing first.

Thanks so much for all the good advice. The water in the freshwater tank has been in there for a good while-any need to sanitize? If so, what is the best method? Thanks again

Haven't done that, some use bleach, I had better defer to the experts for the exact procedures.

We use bleach. Pour it into the fill hose and fill your on-board water tank. Turn on all the faucets to push the mixture through all of the lines, including the drains. Let the bleach water sit over night, drain the on-board water tank, (we do it through the faucets), and then fill with fresh water.

Also, a suggestion. Use a sediment filter for all of your water going into your unit, including the on-board holding tank. We have never had any problems with sand in the screens or low water pressure from using this process.

Drjj, if you're not getting a bad taste from water in the freshwater tank I wouldn't worry about sanitizing it. We keep water in ours up to six months, then drain and refill. The prior Montana we fulltimed in for 3 1/2 years using the above method and never had need to sanitize the tank. Likewise with this one except it's just 13 months old.
