Anybody pulling a nearly 17k GVWR Montana with a 250/2500 truck doesn't have a say here. You're part of the problem. I'm done here.

I've watched this thread from inception, not because I'm going to modify a 3/4 ton to be a "bigger/better" truck but because I was interested in what/how something like that is done. I just buy new trucks and would never think about going to those lengths to try to make "this" into "that", doesn't seem worthwhile or cost effective.

That said, if a person was willing to do that, paid for it and had a qualified shop able to then recertify the truck....I'm not sure what I think about that. It's probably legit. If that is the case I suppose folks like me just look at those new cert labels and shake our heads....but I accept it - I don't make those rules.

As was said those mods were made for whatever reasons and they seem like they meet regulations. Would I do it? No. Do I think there are many more things to worry about when trying to make a truck a "bigger truck" than springs etc.? Absolutely (hence proper truck). On the other hand, the effort was made, the regs were met by stickers.....informational to me.

So I wonder if the OP has a definitive answer after 60+ responses.

If I'm not mistaken, the original question by the author, who owns a 2500, is whether or not to install airbags, and any problems associated with them....period. His post was not here to be beaten up by the 350/3500/4500, and the dually crowd. So sorry if some of us members don't have the most ideal tow vehicle.

I'm not in favor of RVs having to stop at Weigh Stations, but I think it would put an end to some of this debate and maybe even get of dangerously overloaded units off the roads.
We were in a CG and saw a 1500 Chevy leaving with a Huge Slide in Camper, the rear bumper was almost dragging on the ground.

Basically he wanted to know about leaks , I think he got a pretty good answer to that .

I have listened to these debates about the 3/4 vs 1 ton's for years now, and at one time I do know there was no difference between the 250 ,and 350 Ford Superduty ,except for the rear leaf springs, you could google part #'s for brakes ,axles etc etc etc, no difference.

When I bought my 2008 3400RL Montana fifth wheel new , I was overloaded with my 1999 Ford Superduty 350. Now with my 2014 Ram 3500 I am now not over my weight ratings with the same fifth wheel. Both trucks came new with 16" tires rated for 3640 lbs. I know power has a lot to do with ratings, as well as other thinks.

It just seems these 1 ton trucks keep getting better weight ratings in SRW as time goes on ,yet to me the limiting factor at some point has got to be the tire ratings.

They come with duallies, mine was in my packet next to my owner's manual in the glovebox.

On my 2018 ram dually they take out one rear spring on each side and put airbags in on the rear axle as part of the rear air leveling option.

I'd have never ordered this but it was on the truck on the lot I ended up buying.
It's the greatest thing ever. Hook up to the montana and hear the air compressor hum and truck back to level. It's really neat.

Not that the truck really drops much, because did I mention IT'S A DUALLY.

No trouble parking it, no trouble driving it, don't do anything different than I used to do in my 2015 silverado duramax 2500hd.

Yep back then the SRW f350 had a spacer block, overload springs and possibly a little different rear spring pack, I am not positive. The other big thing was a GVW rating go 9,900 lbs verse 8,800 lbs. Lots of difference between those trucks and the DRW option. I really liked my 2000 F-350 except the terrible turning radius and noise.

You may be new, but do you want someone telling you it's OK to tow grossly overloaded because they do?? Sort of like when your Mother asked "If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you follow?"

I’m new to this forum but have been an RV’er for many years. The overload towing was not what I was referring to. It was the attitude in his response.

Pull up a chair and don't get your hair in a dander . Maybe the wording was harsh to you but not a common thing. On the other hand, if you condone or encourage folks to tow overloaded you will get feedback. Settle in and cruise for awhile - great site and great folks with lots to share.

Some get like that when they get the weight police badge from Tony the Tiger.

The forum has a feature called PM, or private message. If you have an issue with someone, especially if it doesn't affect you personally, you can message them there.
