Hitch Question

Just purchased a 2019 F-350 crew cab, 4x4 6.7 diesel short bed truck, to pull my brand new 2020 Keystone Montana 3021RL. I presently have a Husky 16K slider hitch and I'm having that installed Monday. With my old truck...a 2012 F-250 6.2 crew cab gasser...and there was very little room between the tailgate once it was lowered to hook up the 5ver and the front storage door on the camper. Am I going to have a problem with the new truck????? I'm hoping there is enough room so I can lower the tailgate to hook up the 5th wheel. Looks like it is going to be pretty tight...to say the least!

First of all, I'm happy to see you stepped up to a 1 ton TV. Smart move. Most likely the tailgate will be close. Since it's a new TV I would definitely have someone spot me while backing up the first time to make sure there's no contact.

My Andersen hitch gives me a 9" set back from rear axle. I have enough room to walk between open tailgate and 5er. Without the Andersen it would be close but still wouldn't touch. However, coming in at an angle could prove precarious. Just be careful as you learn your parameters.

New truck. New trailer... old under rated hitch. Doesn't make sense. Need to look at the Pullrite 20K super glide (Part Number #2914 if you have the puck system)

We have a F350 Dually, and have adequate clearance for the tailgate so long as the truck is lined up square with the fiver.

My 2014 F350 is a long bed with the puck system and I have a B&W companion (not a slider since I have a long bed). With the tailgate down, once I am engaged in the hitch, my tailgate is only about 4-5 inches from touching the front of the rig. Scared me the first few times I hooked up, but I've gotten used to it.
As above, be very careful when at an angle. Even my long bed tailgate will hit the rig if the angle is severe enough.

If you do much travel and camping, there WILL be times you will not be able to keep the truck and trailer in straight alignment. If your tail gate is "that" close, then I advise looking for an alternative. Like... removing the tail gate and replacing with one of those tail gates with the cut out for the king ping to pass over. We put just over 24,000 miles on since October, 2019. I have considered a tailgate like you mentioned, but my truck is also a daily driver and I would lose the backup camera and my Retrax Pro bed cover would become useless.

Tailgates aren't permanent, I use the stock tailgate when I'm not towing and a 5th-wheel tailgate when I am towing. Takes all of 30 seconds to take one off and put the other one on....

I dont have room to carry around a second tailgate and replace after setting up camp, then change again before leaving. Not really a practical solution for me.

#1- Get a new hitch a16k hitch is too light. I use a curt 24k and it has been great.
#2 (my opinion) should have gotten a long bed. Much less worries with hitches/smashing windows etc.
#3 With my set up, I can easily walk from side to side while hitched up with the tailgate down.

This is a good buy it makes life easier.

i have a 2018 3791 RD. I use to pull it with a 2016 F-250. i purchased a 2021 F-350 crew cab 6.7 with a 6.5 bed. I use a Demco Auto Slide. this is a excellent hitch. Very solid and the auto slide enables me to turn the truck 90 degrees with out getting out and making hitch adjustments. i would suggest this hitch. I would also suggest that you change to a under mount hitch.

I removed my Pullrite Superglide and went to a Pullrite Superlite (20K) for my 3790RD Monty. I'm old enough that I really appreciate being able to remove the hitch w/o help. I'm pushing 80.
My TV is a '11 F350 SuperDuty shorted. No problems parking in 15 yrs on the road.

I don't see a 3021RL listed on the Montana site, but there is a 3120RL. That is a 16,000lb trailer, I would want at least a 21k hitch, and I personally have a 27k for my 3811MS. Good luck.

In my experience, I've not had this problem. Sometimes that has taken a bit of extra wiggling to get everything straight before I unhook. But, just like anything else with towing a large rig, take your time, and even get out and walk around the area if you need to.

I use a 27k hitch with the 3121, the factory Ford hitch for the puck system. I have approximately 6” between a tailgate in a down position and the front of the trailer. No slider in my shortbed, but it’s not been an issue. I would ever try 90 degree backing as I’m not putting that much stress on trailer frame, axles and bearings. BTW, pulling with a 17 Ford Super Duty.

Here's new new angle

I use a short bed ford pickup with a 20K super glide hitch.
(pulling a 16k Montana High country )

The hitch will automatically slide back about 14" when making a turn. Thus clearing my tailgate (in closed position) from the front of the camper and also clearing the truck's back window from the camper body.

I believe your hitch is a manual slider--which can be trouble if you forget to slide and try turning--not to mention people behind you getting annoyed at waiting.

NOTE: I have tried and i am able to JACK KNIFE the truck and trailer with no problems and swing in a complete circle. (camper tires are not happy doing this-so 70 degree turns are better than 90's)

One hitch disconnect advantage with the Pullright super glide Hitch is that you can disconnect at a 90 degree angle by removing the two pins that let the hitch rock (forward and back) and then lifting the trailer up; keeping the hitch still locked on . (great for tight state park sites)

You then pull the truck away and with the help of another person pull the disconnect while the other person holds / catches the top portion. (about 50 lbs)

One disadvantage of the super glide is that you need to install a CAPTURE PLATE on the trailer before using the hitch. This plate has a square plate attached that will not let the PIN in the pin box rotate on the hitch. It locks both together securely and forces the entire hitch itself to rotate with any turning motion.

TIRES you never mentioned whether the truck is a dully or not. Most tires have a rating of 3640 max weight each (tires are the weakest link)

that give you a total capacity of 7,280 weigh on the rear . (truck and pin weight)
Yokohoma Geolander tires have a weight rating of 4080 each for a total of 8,160 lbs. Thus the Yokohama increases pin capacity by 880 lbs. This might be of interest if you are using only single rear wheel drive.

Well to answer your question ,and didn't see it answered ,you basically have the same bed length I believe. So if its mounted in the same position as your old truck ,then yes you will have pretty much the same clearance as before .
