Registration & Taxes (PA & DE)

Retiring in a two years and looking at relocating to PA or DE. Just wondering how the state/county deals with a 1 ton truck and fifth wheel for yearly registration and taxes (property). Thinking of Cumberland County, PA and/or Kent County DE (maybe Sussex). Thanks.

In PA the county can only charge $5 on top of the state fees for registration. The truck registration fees are based on weights and so are the trailer fees.

I happen to live in Cumberland County, PA. Most county and local government revenue in PA is generated from property taxes. Rates will vary mostly by what school district that you choose to live in. Generally property taxes in Cumberland are lower than most in the midstate area.

See the info below for the annual vehicle registration fees:

Motor Vehicle Services Fees

Class Weight Range Fee

1 5,000 or Less 64.00
2 5,001 - 7,000 89.00
3 7,001 - 9,000 170.00
4A 9,001 - 10,000 220.00
4B 10,001 - 11,000 220.00
5 11,001 - 14,000 335.00
6 14,001 - 17,000 397.00
7 17,001 - 21,000 490.00
8 21,001 - 26,000 559.00
9 26,001 - 30,000 651.00

Recreational Trailer and Recreational Cargo Trailer:
• 8,000 pounds or less:

• Five Year: $175.00

So seems like your trailer would be a flat one time fee of $425 and your truck would be a class 5 (approx. 11.5K GVRW) at $335/yr.
