Black marks on slide out sides
What have folks done about the black marks on the sides of slide outs? Seems like the seals must rubbing the sides when traveling. I have used WD-40 to remove the marks and waxed the sides but they still come back even after short trips.
Any suggestions?

Just cleaning them off, same as you. I am not sure how to prevent them, maybe talcum powder?

I use Goof off spray to clean and keep slides waxed to ease the cleaning effort.

I don't know about yours, but after 4 1/2 years, the seals have worn through the black color on the slide sides and now there are bright white marks. These do *NOT* clean up with the usual products.

We just had our rig into the dealer for other matters and mentioned the black streaks. They found some kind of sticky coating on the inside of the rubber that was causing the streaking. They removed the sticky stuff with a solvent they had. The black streaks are now gone. They did mention that the only thing recommended for use on the rubber seals was baby powder. Over time the liquid stuff in spray cans will damage the seals.

Well I reckon that's one place's opinion. I went with the talcum powder (baby powder) for a while and the black marks seemd to get worse. Baby Powder does nothing to moisturize the seals. These seals are not made of anything extra ordinary from say automotive door seals. Silicone spray or any vinyl/rubber conditioner has worked for me for several years without deteriorating the seal itself. I've recently had good luck with Turtle Wax Luxe Leather ... UV protectant, good for vinyl, leather, and rubber , and doesn't leave a greasy residue on the slides .

Thank you Don. That is very interesting advice. Ever since my first camper with a slide out, the dealer always recommended a cleaner and lubricant/protectant product for the seals. I usually clean and condition the seals on my slide-outs at least once per year.
Anyone else have an opinion on whether to use or not use a seal conditioner?

I use black streak cleaner and it works great. I keep it waxed and it helps but the black streaks seem to come back.

Sticky stuff must have come from the factory what did they clean the seals with
