Rubber (Plastic ?) moulding

Has anyone found a good way of cleaning the thin moulding that runs between the fibreglass top 3/4 of the Montana and the metal at the bottom. This moulding seems to get a mould on it which seems impossible to remove. Your help would be appreciated. Diana

This past summer with the extreme humidity that we have in this part of Texas the rubber trim on our trailer became a rather unsightly black especially on the south side of the trailer that is exposed to the constant wind off the Gulf of Mexico.

I have had a couple of occasions to use this product to treat mold and mildew inside and outside of a house so I thought that I would try it on the trailer. I mixed into a spray bottle a double recommended application of "Consan Triple Action 20" mixed with about 1/2 oz. of bleach. I would spray the rubber trim every other day or so for a couple of weeks and let dry without rubbing or trying to scrub off the black.

The results were not immediate and I don't know which of the products are responsible for making the black disappear. Presently the trim appears nearly new with about 98% of the black removed, only a couple of spots remain.

Here is a link to this product and looking at the MSDS it is a chemical that demands respect. Also a description of uses and items that it can be used to treat.

http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_...NR=058044#Uses

This not a recommendation for this product, just giving results from a personal application.

Try the product "awesome" from the $1.00 store. You can find it there in the cleaning section. A lot of people on the forum swear by it; I just cleaned black spots off our trim today with it. Works great. Try to do a search for info in the archives.

I am with Tara on the Awesome product. I now own 3 bottles of the stuff and it works great. Just remember that it is a degreaser, it will take the wax off.

Thanks all - found and tried the "awesome" product. I think the name is a bit of an exaggeration but it does seem to get off some of the "mould" (or whatever is causing the black spots). I have yet to find the Consan product but will keep looking and will try it.

Thanks again to all. Maybe we are just too picky but the rig is so beautiful that we try to spend a lot of time keeping it that way. We have seen too many sad rigs that are crying out for attention, just a bit of polish and "elbow grease" would help - it is not going to happen to our Monty, the trim is the last small problem area to deal with.

We have had trouble keeping that trim clean too, here is another way to get it pretty again

CHANGE IT OUT!!

Buy new.

We got tired of trying to get clean it, get part clean, in no time at all, it would be nasty again.

Just an alternative action. Still a lot of work!

I heard that applying awesome AND scrubbing with a toothbrush helps.
I plan to try this method in next few days.

It's a lot easier to purchase new stripping from CW than to spend all that time scrubbing (if it is extremely dirty). However, I don't let the aging of the stripping bother me. So what if it seems a little discolored. I try to keep the rest of the rig looking good and when the stripping begins to annoy me, I'll change it out.

The new Montanas have a different trim. It appears to be a plastic of some sort rather than rubber or soft vinyl. I wonder if a retrofit with the new trim would be a long term solution for you. We've only had ours less than three months so it's too early to tell whether the new trim will avoid the old problem. My bet is Keystone read here about the mold problem and switched to a different trim.

Ok, My two cents... I use this stuff (can be purchased at grocery stores and Wally world) for that trim on my 2002 unit...let it sit. It has caused some white streaks on my lower wrap-around Aluminum which needs something different to clean this material, once I find that my unit will look brandy new!
