Valves thaw quick with the heat on.

I last used my rig during Thanksgiving and it has been sitting closed up in the yard since. I still needed to dump the black tank though (I had added several gallons of antifreeze to insure it wouldn't freeze in there). So I went to empty the tank and found the valve frozen shut. The other valves were frozen also, even though those tanks were empty. I decided to turn on the heat in the unit for a few hours to see if it would thaw anything and much to my surprize, after about 2-3 hours all the valves were thawed and functioning again. I guess I was very surprized that there was enough heat going into the underbelly that it loosened things up that quickly. Just thought I'd post this as an FYI for anyone else that has cause to fool with those valves in the dead of winter. Marcia

This is good to know, Starchmill, especially since we don't winterize in Alabama. We just turn the thermostat to 50' and hope that it will keep things unfrozen if we do have cold temps. Good to hear the furnace is so effective.

We recently had the edge of the bellypan dropped when the furnace was running and found that two-inch furnace duct does a great job of heating things up in there. Another way to thaw out the valve is to fire up the water heater and when the water is hot put all ten gallons of hot water into the tank. This assume the tank is essentially empty to start with.

We also recently thawed out a full and frozen dump pipe, the part below the belly, the same way. Ten gallons of hot water into the tank. This assumes the valve is opened, though.
