Recall for 2008-9 year with IOTA transfer switches

I guess it is better late than never, I assume this has not been posted previously? Per RV Business:

Keystone RV Co. is recalling 3,585 model year 2008-2009 Big Sky, Challenger, Everest, Fuzion, Montana, and Raptor travel trailers and fifth-wheels equipped with an IOTA ITS-50R transfer switch. These transfer switches, used in vehicles wired to be powered by a generator, may fail when exposed to elevated electrical loads and used in higher ambient temperatures. Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will replace the IOTA ITS-50R transfer switch with a different brand transfer switch, free of charge. The recall was expected to begin Oct. 5, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service by calling 1-866-425-4369. Keystone’s number for this recall is 15-234.

Well, that is the way keystone should be handling business. I imagine that this is now occuring is that it really is a long term failure mode and wasn't happening early in the life of those units. John

Keystone did a recall on that swtich about 2 years ago on our 2010 3150RL. I guess someone woke up and decided they better do a recall on units prior to 2010.

My IOTA Transfer switch caught fire about 2 years ago. I contacted Keystone regarding the ATS, since they had recalled the same switches in newer models of products. They told me that my Montana was NOT included in the recall and I would have to replace it myself, which I did. I saved the switch. So I guess I'll call them tomorrow and find out if I can get reimbursed for my repair.
I'm not a betting man, usually, but I'm thinking I'm gonna get nada.

We have a 2007 Montana 3500RL and had to replace mine last summer after it failed. It didn't catch fire, simply just wouldn't work. I called Montana and was able BUY a new one. They didn't inform me of a recall or mention of the problem before hand. It was a little costly. Refund in sight, doubt it.

I have an '09 3400RL that was recalled a few years ago for the transfer switch. Wonder if I'll get another recall letter?

My 2008 3400RL went bad nearly three years ago, and replaced. This is an old issue, surprised it has popped up again on another recall . I wonder if I will get a recall, never got the first one, but there was no charge to replace it because of a recall.

Mine didn't catch fire, but overheated pretty bad, and melted wire insulation a little. I googled the problem, and found out the issue, tightened the lugs on the wiring, and had no more problems until I got back home ,and had it replaced. I was told there was recalls on them, but I didn't receive a recall . They replaced it with no charge .

Reading about this stuff scares me since I believe a manufacturer will fight tooth and nail to avoid a recall.

I have a 2006 unit and no idea what transfer switch is installed, but I guess after 10 years with this trailer connected to shore power or my dual Honda gennies, I have not had any problems. I have reset a breaker on a post when connected to 30 amp or 50 amp, or on the gennies (30 amp) and I believe these were caused by me or DW turning on a device we shouldn't have.

If I remember correctly ,if you don't have a inboard generator, or the factory generator prep, then you don't have a transfer switch in question.

We are second owners of our 09 Monty. We are factory prepped for gen set as far as I know. I have searched specific areas(following power cord, converter box area, etc.) for the box for the switch but no luck . Located Iota boxes in toilet room but no switch box behind. Questioning whether unit is really prepped or not.

Any ideas?

They must of changed things around from 2008 to 2009. On my 2008 3400RL the Iota transfer box is in the front battery compartment, which to me seems like the logical place, considering where the generator is.

On edit: are you possibly referring to the on/off switch for the generator that is located on the wall of the front closet. Thats a strange place to put that electrical transfer box.

I would think it would be where mine is at in the front battery compartment.

I am trying to remember when the change occurred but there was a change from gen-set ready to gen-set prepped that were two totally different things. Gen-set ready (I think that is the designation Montana used) meant that the entire system, switch, transfer switch, and all wiring were installed and all that needed added was the genny. Later years were gen-set prepped which only provided the control wiring that was needed for the installation. All other items had to be purchased separately. If there is a control wire (thin) from the front of the rig to the battery compartment, then most-likely there was not a transfer switch installed. I think that this change occurred in the 2008-9 timeframe. Our 2007 model had the transfer switch mounted on the back wall of the battery compartment.

Back wall of the battery compartment as said is where mine is. At the time my friend had the 2009 3400RL , and I told him about it, but he didn't have a generator, nor the prep

Did they change the location of the transfer switch to somewhere else other then the battery compartment ?

Yes, the transfer box is in the front battery compartment. The on/off switch is located in the closet.

This info applies to our unit. Thin wire to battery and nothing on back wall in compartment matches our specs. I see nothing that even looks similar to a switch box. I am familiar with the change-over boxes from previous m/h I owned.
