I did the backing plate-shoe assembly and at the same time upgraded to the self adjusting brakes

Ditto to 8.1al! Not only that but upgraded to #7000 Dexter assemblies (I have #6000 axles). They have a different shoe composite and larger magnet. There is a noticeable difference in my braking.

I checked a while back and found it to be a small difference between shoes and the whole enchilada.
It is good to know there is a differnce. I alway thought they were the same.

I have done it both ways and I like changing the assembly better. Much easier and less time, in my experience.

When you change the complete assembly, you're getting all New Parts. Not putting new shoes on an old horse, so to speak, and wondering if the Magnets may be near their end of life or some other small part near it's breaking point.

8.1al,
Now you have my attention. Who did you use for a source for the backing plate and brakes? I like the idea of new magnets and self-adjusting.

Brad,
i did the same as 8.1al. I got my brake assemblies from etrailer.com. As I recall at that time (last Spring) shipping was free.

Good call. When it comes time to replace my brakes, this will be what I will do.

I went to the hybrid axle and put on 3 3/8 by 12 1/4 brakes. WHAT a difference. Was in yellowstone and Glacier this year, no worries about brakes on those long grades. Best mod ever
