Tow vehicle battery

I'm curious! Is the towing vehicles 12 volt system suppossed to be connected to the coach twelve volt system when the trailer umbilical is connected? I never noticed before but today when I was going to store the trailer and disconnected the coach batterybefore I unhookeed the truck. I thought the 12 volt coach lights would still work -- they didn't! Before I go to troubleshooting I thought I should know how it is suppossed to be.
Thanks for any help you provide.

If you are referring to the coaches marker and tail lights No they do not work once the trailer has been unplugged from the truck. All other trailer interior 12 volt lights and accessories will work off of the trailers 12 volt system.

Through the battery charge circuit the 12v accessories will work. I had gone to the dealer to p/u my trailer form service and found the coach battery dead. I plugged in the truck and was able to raise the jacks.

Try it with the truck engine running. I don't know for sure but was told the truck may have an isolator that keeps the coach from drawing down the truck's battery when the truck is not running to recharge its battery. If you try it, please post the results. I'm really curious about this. Thanks.

My 2001 Chevy 3500 does provide 12v to the umbilical as long sa it is connected. The truck does not have to be running. I wish I had an isolator relay (like the Fords) that would cut power to the trailer when the truck's ignition was off.

Dear DrivesBGM,

Gm's don't have the relay switch , but they do have a battery run down protector that will shut all electrical draws when the battery gets low. This leaves enough charge to start the vehicle. If the RV's batteries are low, they will pull from the truck's battery if the umbilical cord is plugged in. It is always good advice to unplug it if the truck & RV are sitting idle for several hours. Sometimes on long trips, if we are staying at a location for just overnight we don't unhook the monty from the truck, but do unhook the umbilical cord. Had a previous TT that the battery went bad on a trip, back in the early days, and didn't unplug the cord overnight. Even though we were plugged into campground service, the RV drained the tow vehicle's battery to where the drain down protector shut off all the power source. Had to re-program the clock, radio, etc accessories.
