Ever lock your keys in your truck?

I got an email the other day saying just call home with the cell phone and have someone grab your spare remote opener and key it over the phone while you're holding yours near the vehicle. I thought that it was a joke until mine opened up right now. Figured I'd pass this on...

I have a key pad on the door of the truck I presently have. Love that convenience and sometimes I will briefly leave it running with the doors locked. I also carry a spare in my wallet. However the cell phone is a great idea to remember.

Good tip. I confess I would have never thought of that.

Gary, That e-mail has been around for a while. I tried it on both a Ford and GM model just to see if it worked. Never did get it to work. Tried several times holding the phone in several places around the vehicle. Glad it worked for you. What model vehicle and where did you hold the cell phone in relationship to the vehicle? Jim

I have one of the push button door entry pads, but I can't remember the dang code. I learn it, never use it, then learn it again, then forget it again. Never have checked to see if it could be recoded, but I bet it could. Maybe I'll go do that now.

We tried the cell phone trick last year when we first read about it and it worked well for us. Our truck will not allow us to lock the keys inside providing the keys are in the ignition. However, if they're sitting on the seat or floor, all bets are off. That's why I never lay my keys down inside a vehicle.

Stiles, check your owners manual packet, it should have a white "credit card" with 5 numbers on it. You can change the code to something easier to remember. And I believe the O/M tells you how to do that instead of having to go to the dealer to have it done.
That said, if you can't find the card you would have to go to the dealer and have them hook up the diagnostic machine to tell you what the code is and at that point you can have them change the code to something easier to remember.

This myth has been floating around for many, many years now. It is not true and even the Myth Busters did a segment on it (result = Busted!) in 2008. But don't believe them (or me). Read the opinions of several other organizations who validate these kinds of claims.

As for Stiles' question about recoding the keyless entry pad on his Ford, yes you can - sort of. You can not change the factory assigned code. That is there forever. But you can *ADD* your own personal five digit code.

The factory assigned code is located on the owner’s wallet card in the glove box, is marked on the computer module, and is available from your authorized dealer. You need the factory assigned code to set your own personal code, so hopefully you can find the one in the glove box and avoid a trip to the dealer ($$$).

To create your own personal entry code:
1. Enter the factory set code.
2. Within five seconds press the 1 • 2 on the keypad.
3. Enter your personal 5-digit code. Each number must be entered
within five seconds of each other.

There are some other tricks you can perform too. Read about them, how to set your personal code, and restrictions on the personal code, in the owners manual or at:
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pub.../08f23og4e.pdf

There are lots of opinions, but facts are real.

My 2005 F350 had a key coded door. The dealer (used vehicle) did not have the code. I went to the ford dealer, showed proof of ownership, and they looked up and gave me the 5 digit code for free.

That was then, this is now!

I also got a blank key made and kept it in my wallet. It would not start the truck because the OEM was chipped, but it did open the door.

Butch, it works for us. We tried it. Maybe it only works with certain phones or other situations? But it worked for us.

We have the magnetic box with an extra key for the montana also. Nothing would be worse than far away from home and lose the keys.

For you Ford owners: If your vehicle has the remote entry key fob and you would like the little keypad to mount on the door then check your Ford dealer. I just bought one that sticks on your vehicle; NO WIRING! It's radio controlled like the key fob. It also has a factory code, and you can add a personal code as simple as ever. Other vehicle makes may have something similar. I love having the option to open the vehicle without my key.

I found out the hard way that when you remove both batteries from an F250 that the doors lock.

Don't leave your keys on the seat!
