Air Deflector's
Anyone using an air deflector that mounts on the roof of your TV? Are they worth it for increased fuel economy?

I looked into them a few years ago, don't waste your money. They reportedly do reduce the amount of bug juice/remains on the front of the rig though.

It's more of a gimmick than anything else. Then why do they sell them? Because we think we need them.

If you look around in the south during the winter, Texas, Florida, Alabama, (ain't been to Arizona yet, so cannot comment) you rarely see them. HMMMMM, all these full parks with lots of 5ers (and motorhomes) and I'll bet in this park, there might be 1, maybe 2 of them. I know there is one. Not sure bout the 2!>G>G>
BTW: More Montanas, Big Skys and Mountaineers here than any other brand,

As stated above they do a good job of keeping the bugs off your trailer, now they're all over your wind deflector. That's about all they are good for.

Look at how the deflector system is arranged on a 18 wheeler. In a PU a great deal of turbulance is in the bed of the truck. Place some popcorn packing or rolled up paper in the bed with the 5th wheel attached and drive down the road..

Bought one a few years ago second hand from a guy I worked with. At the time I had a 460 gasser and was willing to try anything to best 7 mpg on a good day. A steal at $100 for a Taylor Wing ... or so I thought. The wing does two things ... keeps the bugs off the center of your front cap and makes an impressive water swirl in front of the front cap during a rain storm. It made no difference in MPG. Sold it at a swap meet. If one argues that you see them on semi's all the time, you're not comparing apples to apples as Rich already mentioned.

Been there- done that- Keeps bugs off front cap- Did not increase mpg- But it is easier to wash the deflector than the front cap- Don

The Class 8 Trucks are much larger and set closer to the Trailer that the 1 tons. So the air foils do work, I have run by type Truck with and without. With the Air foils I alway got a fuel bonus each month. Now there are some who will say it improves their fuel mileage. It my opinion that its just another feel good gadget. It will reduce some of the bugs on the front of the 5er. Our Truck sets so high that we only have about 18" of possible bugs. GBY....

I think the design of the front cap of the Monty gets defeated with an addon air deflector that was mounted on the TV too far front to do any good anyway. By having extra turbulence right behind the deflector and right in front of the 5er, it just doesn't seem like it would help. For it to help the deflector would have to be mounted right in front of the 5er, but isn't that what the 5'er front cap does since it has some aerodynamics?
I think these might help if you were carrying a tall load above the truck bed and are trying to provide some aerodynamics but for a towed item I don't think it helps.
