Michigan in September

After the Goshen rally, the DW wants to go to Michigan. We’re looking for travel ideas and campgrounds you’d recommend. We enjoy site seeing, the outdoors, older architecture and museums. We’re not shoppers, wine tasters, fine diners.

Thanks

Not sure how much time you have or where you are headed. We went up to Mackinaw and did the carriage ride and sightseeing on the Island. Going across the bridge is great. We did a side trip to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. They have the actual bell from the Edmond Fitzgerald there. If you go across the top, Door County in Wisconsin is also great. Take in a fish boil with a piece of cherry pie.

We're presently at Algonac State Park north of Detroit. It sits on the Saint Clair River and you can watch the Freighters going by.

We live in the UP and our favorite places to go are in the Keweenaw peninsula.

Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor has a nice state campground, but might be difficult to get in without reservations. There is a fort within walking distance, and lots of scenic areas on Lake Superior.

McLain state park is our favorite and located near Houghton/Hancock on Lake Superior’s west shore. This area is where the copper boom was and there is a lot of history here in the form of mines, small museums in nearby towns. Miles of beautiful Lake Superior shoreline if you enjoy hunting for agates and other rocks and minerals.

Lake Gogebic is the largest inland lake in the UP and has a nice state park on it. To the north is Lake of the Clouds and you are close to Iron Mountain where there are many waterfalls nearby.

Hope this helps and you enjoy your trip.

We second the Shipwreck Museum and the Pictured Rocks National Seashore in Munising, MI.

Traverse City, MI is a beautiful area but DO NOT take your RV on the "tunnel of trees" road along Lake Michigan.

Sault St Marie, MI has a City campground - Aune Osborne - which is along the Saint Mary River where all the great lake freighters travel to get to the locks (which is very interesting to see).

If you travel the UP of Michigan and wander into Wisconsin the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior in Wisconsin is a great visit and also Duluth along Lake Superior in Minnesota.

Agree with other recommendations. Will add a recommendation for Drummond Island. Nice ferry ride ($44, last year).

X2 on Munising--great small town and nice RV park on Lake Superior. Check out the sights nearby. Duluth has nice sightseeing and a wonderful lighthouse about 20 miles up the lake shore. Great bike trails in Duluth and Traverse City.

We just returned from a 2 month trip on our boat to Lake Superior and I agree with everything said about the UP. Beautiful up there.. Just thought I would add that there is an island in the Apostles, Madeline Island, that has a state campground on it. We took a ferry over to visit the island for a day and there were two 5ers going over on the ferry. Might be fun to do.

Thanks for the tips guys. We will be in the UP for a few weeks before the rally. Near St. Ignace.
