Last time was there the road was good allthough it is the wide open spaces. Be sure and fill up in FT Stockton. Sanderson is a fair size place, for out there, you should be able to get fuel there, atleast you could last time I was there. If you like the desert lots to see. Judge Roy Bean in Langtry is a good stop IMO. Of course it will be windy. Hope this helps some. Have a safe trip.

Just came through same route. Road is good, boring and watch out for deer. Sorenson has good gas station. Diesel was 3.599 gal.
We are not staying Lonesome Dove in Del Rio SP 27. Road from Del Rio to Eagle Pass last year was torn up, gravel & real mess. Don't know if it is finished. Would bet not.
Have safe drive.

We towed most of that route in the opposite direction. We towed through Eagle pass from the south, then up to US 90 and took that all the way to El Paso. It is somewhat a lonely road in that there is little traffic. But it's good road with good shoulders (if I recall). It had some flat sandy stretches and some mountainy stretches, which surprised me. I found it a relaxing and enjoyable tow.
If you have in mind doing any sightseeing on the way, see Judge Roy Bean's The Law West of the Pecos place at Langtry, TX. It's worth a stop. We parked near the place with the Montana in tow, no problem.
Somewhere along in that same area you'll cross a bridge over a deep canyon. Just after the bridge (south of the bridge) on the west/right side is an entrance to a scenic viewing area up on top of a hill, overlooking the canyon and the river's junction with the Rio Grande. I think it was the Pecos, but I'm not sure about that.
I'd make the drive again, in other words. But first I'd check to see if that construction Syplace mentioned is done. We went through there in 2004 or 2005 and there was a little construction but only for a couple of miles. It sounds worse now.

Just found out yesterday that the road from Del Rio to Eagle Pass is open and smooth. Construction is done.

Thanks to all who replied- The roads were good- The scenery outstanding ( pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and javelina were sighted )- Took a side trip to Big Bend Natl Park for 4 days ( not enuf time to do justice to the park but the weather was cold and windy )- Watched chihuahua races in Terlingua - It was a BIG thing to the locals - There is no Verizon service in the park- no tv- but we had full hookups - If you go, top off your fuel tanks at every opportunity - THANKS AGAIN - Don

Did you stay in the park at Terlingua? We had a Cingular cell signal there and had no trouble with our calls. However, our aircard that we have now is Verizon so we'd not have internet. I would like to go back to Big Bend someday so will have to keep that in mind. Sounds like you had a very enjoyable trip. Big Bend surprised me. We'd never heard much about it. But we really enjoyed it.

We stayed at Rio Grande Village campsites in the park- 100 yards from the Rio- Had full hookups in a parking lot- Primative Natl Park campground was next door- Concessionaire operated full service area and laundry and showers and convenience store- Would like to return with a Jeep to explore the back roads- Most back roads were off limits to a dually- Get to the campground early as there are only 20 hookups- 80 miles from Marathon, Tx to the gatekeeper,40 more miles to the main visiter center, and 20 more to Rio Grande Village- The Park is HUGE- Don

If you get the chance to return and do those backroads, by all means do. We did some of them but not all. We want to go back and do the rest one of these days. And we also want to do the hikes we didn't get to and maybe do again those we did the first time. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip.

It's nice to read these reports. There is so much of this country that we haven't seen yet. We've only made it to 49 or the 50 states, but so many of them, we only passed through on the way somewhere else. Surprisingly, Louisiana is the only state I haven't been to yet. 2013 is the date for us to really start seeing this country.

Ron, you sound like us. You've been to more states than we have but we, too, still have much to see. I originally thought two years of fulltiming would find us either bored or out of things to see. Last Friday we celebrated our fifth anniversary of fulltiming and we've hardly scratched the surface. Your time will come and I know you and Terrie will enjoy it.
