Hmmm my Propane tanks are trying to contact aliens

Ok this is a new one on me....when the gas is running there is a high pitched squeal or whine or best description is an alien like space ship noise coming from the regulator...let is rest overnight but still there this morning when I turned it on to heat water. Everything works fine but is this a sign my regulator is about to crap to bed????

That is a new one for me. Air in the system maybe? Wonder if you disconnected both tanks the regulator would self purge. I would also check the regulator vent, to make sure it is clear

Try shutting off propane, relieving pressure and then open up slowly. maybe safety float in tank is not positioned right, causing noise.

Valves (air, gas, or liquid) sometimes start squealing. Don't know that there is a solution short of replacement.

Ok gonna try shutting it down and relieve the pressure....I did just fill the tanks but that was about a month or two ago....I do remember my gas grill only having half the fire and I did that and it came back to full pressure....

If it is the little red regulator I just by passed mine. Might not be the right thing to do but it has worked good for about 7 years. If it is the cross over give it a good rap with something like a crescent wrench while it is making the noise. Could just be a small particle stuck in the diafram. Jim

I have a 2 burner heater that when I use it on a new tank the valve hums loud. It does it for a while. I have to turn down the pressure on the tank and it will go away. Just close the valve on the tank till it goes away then you can open it up all the way.

The squeal is from the regulator. If it continues, and it bothers you, just replace it.

And for jimcol, and others that want to remove the red regulator, the following, which was an answer to the question of what the red regulator is for, on a SOB forum:

The main reason for the red regulator is to make sure that once the propane leaves the tank as a vapor that it stays a vapor. Propane regulators in trailers do not regulate liquid only vapor. If the regulator was not there the pressure in the hose/pipe would be the same as the tank. This could lead to the vapor condensing back into a liquid. With a reduction in the pressure from the regulator to the other side of the coach this will greatly reduce the possibility of the vapor in the crossover hose/pipe turning back into a liquid. This is all based on propane’s vapor/pressure saturation points. The lower the pressure the lower the temperature to turn it back into a liquid.

My previous Cougar made this noise for the first three years that I had it. Only cure was replacing the regulator(Red one in that case).

The red regulator keeps the cross over pipe pressured when you remove your tank to refill. With out it the propane will escape and when you hook up your new tank and open the valve the rush of vapor to fill that void can cause the tank safety valve to shut off. On our unit the propane is in the front and the fridge and stove is in the back. I have not heard of anyone having those units having a problem.

Been busy since I got here, but tomorrow I will try a couple of these and get back to y'all if I can get it to stop. It's not terrible that I can't ignore it but just don't like it doing it....

rohrmann is exactly right in his post! These regulators are there for a purpose and should not be removed for safety reasons! If it is acting up then best to have it replaced.

Change the pigtail on the door side tank, had the same issue for years, cured it in 5 minutes.

Mine was making the same noise. I found the tank I had open was very low. When I changed over to my full tank, the noise went away.
