Great Tool
Hi All,
Been using a new to me Tool for about 6 mos. now. It's a Hand held noncontact Thermomter. I bought it to easily check the Temperatures periodically of the trailer wheel bearings, and the Trucks rear differential. Sweet tool. I have found other items to check also, like the Refeigerator and the Oven. The one I bought is the MiniTemp by Raytek. Got it from www.Tooldesk.com I purchased the Mod. with the Laser pointer. This little gadget is very handy and quite simple to use. Just point and shoot. It reads Temps. from 0-525 deg. Some might think all I have to do is feel the wheel with my hand to see if I have an axle bearing getting hot, but I wouldn't recommend checking you differential that way as I have seen mine as high as 235 degrees. Ouch! I walk around mine at rest stops and shoot the wheel right between a couple of lug nuts. The Temps. stay at around 112 to 124 depending on sunny side of the Trailer and it only takes me a minute. I paid about $80 for mine. I know they may also be purchased at Radio Shack and Sears in different Brands ,sizes and shaps. Thought I'd pass along this info. about a very good RV tool.

I also use mine to check my tire temp. If one tire is carrying more weight than the others it will run hotter. I wonder if I could use it on my wife to see how much trouble I may be in at any given moment.

Azstar, I do exactly the same thing. Bought mine at Fry's Electronics in San Diego. It's a very handy tool. I can quickly check wheel bearing and tire temps along with mechanicals with a quick walkaround when we stop at a rest area. Very nice to have, I agree. Mine's a different brand and looks a little different but the function is the same.

I have one also, I check the wheel bearing temps. every time we stop at a rest stop. Just about each time I also have to explain to someone what I am doing. Great tool.

Yep, been using a $30 one from Radio Shack for a while now. I even check meat temps when grilling.
They also help to check drum temps to see if the brakes are indeed working or if in need of adjustment.

We stopped in a mall parking lot once for some reason or other and while Vicki went inside I did the temp check thing. I had a guy jump out of his truck (he also was parked with a FW) and run over and ask me if I was checking tire pressure with 'that thing' and if so where could he get one.  I should have strung him along but didn't.

I have been using a Raytek Ranger Pm for 15 years at that time they sold for $1000.00. I worked for a distributor that sold them and was my demo unit.

They are great little tools aren't they! I've had mine about a year and a half and use it all the time for stuff on the pickup and trailer. Got it at Radio Shack for about 25 or 30 bucks. Had not thought about using it for BBQing.... good idea..
Guess I've got to think "outside the box".

Any of the electronics stores should have it. We got ours at a Fry's Electronics in San Diego. It's either a laser or infrared temperature probe. I don't recall the brand and am nowhere near the truck to check. I've seen it called a "non-contact temperature probe" also.

Radio Shack Infrared Thermometer #22-325. Our Radio Shack is about the size of a single car garage, but they had 8 of them in stock. It may not be as sophisticated as the others mentioned, but I figured it would show a trend in temperature changes.

Hey.. Does this thing sorta look like a small remote control or a cell phone, but the display shows a temp?? If so, there already IS one hanging in a little holder next to the kitchen area in that 95 that we are waiting to buy!

I think the little thing in the holder is a rechargable flashlight.

Mine looks just like a remote control except it has just one button and one readout window. No other bells and whistles but it does everything I want it to do. I took a look at the unit at the end of the link Craig provided. Mine's a lot smaller than that one. It's about the size of the handle on that one. It came with a leather case and resides in its case in a door pocket of our truck, close at hand.

The Radio Shack unit is oblong, 4"x2"x1" thick including belt clip. One push button and a readout window. You might check to see if they have a photo of it on their website.

I actually have an older model of the Raytek and it is a lot smaller than the new model. I also keep mine in the pocket of the driver's door.
