Defective Mission Tires?
Doing our PDI yesterday I closely inspected the tires. All four tires had some indents or ridges radiating from the tread down toward the center. You could slide your hand along the side of the tire and feel the indentations. Anyway I refused to sign off on these. Dealer called Keystone and they are sending four new tires to replace these. Oh and I checked tires on other Montana's on the lot and they did not have this problem.
Anyone know what the problem might have been? And did I do the right thing?
Oh I foregot to check the spare!

I believe Lonnie and/or Glenn will be along to give us some insights into whether or not there is really anything wrong with these indentations. I've noticed over the years with Goodyear, Goodrich, and Firestone tires that they all seem to have these indentations. I understand, and I'm probably wrong, that these appear from the molding process.

Chip,
The indententation lines you saw on the tires are probably nothing to worry about. This is something that happens when the different plys are applied to the tire in a criss cross ( for lack of a better term ) pattern. Some tire mfgrs. do a much better job of laying the plys on, and molding the rubber than others, which makes them less visible, but if you really look close when the light is just right, you can still see the lines. Usually, the higher the quality, the less visible the lines are.
Glenn has been in this business a lot longer than I have, and will probably be along with more information later.
If Keystone replaced the tires, there may have been a problem. I'm sure they will inspect them and if any problems are found, they will return them to the mfgr. for adjustment.

Lonnie's right, those indentations can commonly be found on the side of tires. It in no way affects the soundness of the tire

Better to be safe than sorry. Just goes to show Keystone stands behind their product and vendors.

I really can't explain the indentations any better than Lonnie already has. The indentations are something that you will find on 99% of all radial ply tires. As Lonnie indicated some are just a lot more visible than others. In this case, Keystone standing behind the product is a PR thing and really has nothing to do with the safety of the tires. Keystone may or may not get the same results from the tire manufacturer.
I have these same indentations on my Tacomas on the Monty as well as the Bridgestones on the TV. If you all take a close look at your tires you will, in all probability, find the same thing.

On the subject of inspecting tires when taking delivery. If you care you might want to check that the spare is the same as the 4 on tires. When replacing a defective tire we found the spare to be a different brand and tread pattern.

Keystone will take those four tires back to Goshen and put 'em on the next rig off the assembly line.

Thanks for the info. Surprised me. After inspecting tires on other Montana's that did not have this issue thought for sure this was a problem. Since you all mentioned this I have been looking at tires in general. And yes I can see them in many when in the right light. But no where as pronounced as this unit. I didn't put a straight edge across the depressions but I will bet it is about a 1/8" depression. Each tire had about two or three of these.
By the wat Keystone had the dealer get them the DOT number on each tire before the said they would replace them.
I suppose I could call them and tell them its ok.
Thanks for the education.

I'm thinking that if Montana agree to replaced the tires after checking the DOT numbers there may have been a problem with some of them. Take the new ones.

chip as a retired tire builder for goodyear. the indentations and ridges are usually just cosmetic. they are caused by the ply and other commponet splices being to close together. there was probably nothing wrong with the tires.

Howard ...
As a former tire builder, I am curious what tires you run on your TV and your Monty?
Thanks,
Bill
