Window Shades

My unit is a 2017 with 3 slide outs. The shades are spring loaded where you pull them to desired point and they're supposed to hold at that point. When you want them to go up you pull slightly and they retract on their own. I now have a shade that doesn't retract unless I hand roll it up. I took it off the 'clip bracket' but couldn't find way to re-set the spring. Any suggestions?

We have friends who have the same model and year as the one we have. They had this problem with most of their blinds, yet we did not. They had them fixed or replaced under warranty. Apparently this is a common problem; we just got lucky.

One permanent fix which someone posted on this forum was to have new blinds made at Home Depot, ones with a good quality mechanism. Apparently they will make them to whatever size you want. Then you remove the blind fabric from the new mechanism and attach the fabric that came with the blinds in your unit. This way you keep the same color and thickness.

For what it's worth, we really like these blinds. They keep a lot more heat out than the accordion type do, and in the bedroom they make it really dark no matter how light it is outside. Great for those trips to Alaska or for people who like to sleep late. I am also glad I don't have to replace the accordion blind strings any more. There were several blinds in our previous trailer which I had to replace more than once.

Several folks on here have contacted the shade manufacturer and had replacement parts sent out. For us, when ours die, we'll go to MCD shades. Expensive, but worth it.

Our 2015 came with MCD shades thought, best shade for a RV that I have ever had. Highly recommend them.

I had the MCD shades installed also. Expensive but got tired of the antique design of the accordion shades. The MCD shades work great. This makes you want to open your blinds more often.

Don, we had the same problem with the big one over the back window. We contacted Irvine Shades, the OEM supplier for the Montana's, in Elkhart, IN and told them our problem. They sent out a new spring set up for the retractor mechanism in the shade and it works great. Contact them and see what you get for results.

After 9 months full time we have had no problems with ours. When/if we do I will go the Lowes/Home Depot route because the MCD are so expensive and only slightly better than the ones I have now.

Our 3121 is 6 weeks old, and the metal "tube" at the bottom of one blind has come completely off, and half-way off on a second blind. With that said, I do like these better than the "fold up" blinds we had in the TT.

My Cougar had MCD, now the junk that came with the new 5er does not compare. Total of 12 and 8 replaced under warranty. Not sure they are worth repairing any longer. May just go to MCD in the future!

My MCDs are do a fine job but are labor intensive. The retrach mechanism failed on one, weak on another. The plastic end caps come off and we have to find them before the dog does. They do beat the accordion style. Those strings are heck to replace.

We have had the same problem
When we took the end piece off the plastic gear was in pieces. We found it is not a problem, but this plastic broken gear. Irvine has shipped us new gears. We installed them, set the tension and they work great after this repair

We just took our 39BR MHC in for service and one issue was the large rear blind that would no retract. Guess what - not under warranty. To buy and install at Camping World was $275!

Should have said the spring is not the problem.
The broken plastic gear is the problem

Why not warranty?

Pattiw61 contact Irvine door and shade directly. Mine was out of warranty and they sent new parts for free. They are easy to repair.

CW replaced 2 large and 3 small under warranty. Complete blinds. Then used Irvine CS to repair the rest. Easy and free.

our '17 305RL started dropping the rear shade, off the brackets. The last time it broke the emergency window closer - ordered the day/night shade - very nice.

Most of the shade companies are SUPER SUPPORTIVE - take the shade down and get a pick of the part number - then call the shade company.
