Can't tell from your post what model unit you are referring to. Just thinking outloud as your questions would apply to our 3000RK, under my stairs is the return air for the furnace. To put a heat duct right next to a return air would certainly lower the effort of the duct. The hot air from the duct would immediately go back into the air return reducing the heat that stays in the trailer. Probably make for a cold water closet also if you use the unit in cold weather.
In my unit the heat duct running in the storage area under the bed has no effect on preventing water lines from freezing. They are all behind the petetion seperating the storage area from the underbelly. There is a seperate heat duct dumping directly into the underbelly to keep the pipes from freezing.
Perhaps if we knew what you are trying to accomplish some better suggestions could be offered because I have learned from following this forum, "Somebodies has tried everything!" Jim
