Depends where you want to be... so here's a few suggestions that we like.
Kankakee State Park just off I57 (South side of the city)
Illinois State Park by Zion Il. (North side of the city)
Indiana Dunes State Park (only 45 min from downtown) also if here you can take the South Shore (train) and leave the truck and traffic behind
theres a quick 3 spots

Like Chuck said, it really depends on where you want to be. In far western suburban Sugar Grove there is a very nice Forest Preserve CG, Bliss Woods. Just off of Hwy 47 on Bliss Road. In DeKalb County, there is a small CG in Sycamore, just north of downtown on IL 72.

NW of town, a bit, eh???
McHenry County, there is a campground in Marengo that we found to be quite pleasant, been 4 or 5 years since we were there tho.

Once you find a spot don't forget you're now in Chicago Home to both 1st place teams Sox & Cubs.
What a World Series this would be!

FYI Bliss Woods near Sugar Grove was closed when we were in that part of the country last October. The campground in Marengo was still there and nice. Just about the closest you will get to Chicago itself, I think.

We lived in NW Indiana (28 miles from downtown Chicago) in the '70's and found just over the border in Michigan there was always good camping. I don't know if 6 Flags is still in the northern part of the state, but there was good camping around there.
