Slide out construction question

2014 343rl MHC.
My kitchen slide out is having an issue. Sliding out or in it makes a very jerky motion and noise. Seems kinda like a roller or something like that under the floor is binding up, or something like that. The other 3 slide outs function perfectly.
I have adjusted cables per the manual but before I start tearing things apart, I am wondering how these are constructed. Do they roll in and out on some kind of roller setup? What could be causing such a jerky and loud motion when its going in or out? I can't get to the underside without disassembly and wondered if anyone knowing a lot more than I do has any thoughts before I start surgery.

Thanks!!!

Just a wild guess, but sure sounds like you could have gotten something stuck under the slide, or maybe a cable that isn't in the pulley it's suppose to be in. Just a couple of quick off hand thoughts.

Hadn't thought about a cable jumping a pulley. The cables were pretty slack. That brings up the next question, where are all the pulleys located? How does one get to the bottom apparatus? Do you have to tear off the covering underneath the room? Wonder were I could get a drawing of this whole system?

Thanks for your thoughts, you might be on to something here!

If your kitchen slide is like ours then it likely doesn't have any rollers under it. It just "glides" on the wear bar. That can begin to wear and cause a jerking motion. There are a couple remedies for that. But first open the slide and look underneath. Rollers would be obvious if they are there.

Best bet is to get under the slide and see what you can see. On my 373RD, the small slides have three rollers and my big slide has two rollers. Look at the material that covers the bottom, that will give you a clue what rubs/where. I think my big slide has three slide bars underneath. I use slide seal lube underneath to keep things sliding. Also make sure you lube side and top seals both inside and outside.

This may/may not be your particular brand but it shows operation and where pulleys are located.

The bedroom slide has three rollers right at the coach edge. Plainly visible. This kitchen slide does not. I can't see any rollers. I'll have to take the rubber seal flap off and see if I can see anything in that small gap. There are no rub marks or other obvious signs of bad contact like that on the bottom of the slide.

If you can't see the rollers then you probably don't have any on that slide...our kitchen slide doesn't. Some have used soap or a PTFE spray to help reduce or eliminate the the chatter. Others have installed rollers and there are a couple good YouTube videos on that subject. You might try rubbing some soap under the slide to see if it has any impact on how it works. That should tell you if that's the issue.

Has that slide gotten wet underneath by any chance? Buy some WD40 with PFTE lube at Lowes and spray the darco underneath the slide. It has helped my glide more easily.

This is a prime example of why this owners group and forum are so valuable!

I just went out with a bar of soap and rubbed it onto the complete underside of the slide, not an easy job by the way, and total success! Slide now travels both way in perfect order!
What do you think would be the best lube agent to use other than soap? Would a teflon spray last longer?

Thank you so much for the help. You made my day!

Bill

See above - you can try WD 40 PTFE spray. I've already decided that if/when this issue happens to our HC that I'll be installing rollers.

We had the same exact problem on our 2013 343RL with the kitchen slide. Super easy fix. Open the slide and use a PTFE spray on the rollers under the slide. Let it dry and do it again. Run the slide in and out a couple times after it dries. Do this a couple times a season. Here's what I got. I did it on every slide.

Either your cables need adjustment and/or need some lube. I use the Thetford slide lube which you can get on Amazon. Works for me. If your slide studders consistently, you likely need to adjust cable tension. I watched a tech adjust mine and sometimes it’s a fine art to get it just right.

Slide jerks and awful noise

We had this happen on our unit just this past week. Eventually the slide would not come all the way in. Several teeth had broken off on the ?roller mechanism. Took RV dealer two hours to repair. Covered under warranty.

Try a bar of soap! It worked for me!

We had the same problem for a while on our High Country 318RE. Someone on the forum suggested trying a dry bar of soap rubbed all over the bottom of the kitchen slide. It’s the only one that doesn’t have wheels, just a plastic bar on the floor. It worked like a charm! We tried all kinds of sprays first, and none helped. Cheap fix!

So far, Soap rubbed all over the bottom has fixed the issue. Havent found teflon spray locally so Ill grab some on the road. We are about to pull out for 16 days on the road so I am very happy the soap has seemed to do the trick. Thanks so much to all!
