Bakersfield to Palm Springs
We are overnighting east of highway 99 enroute to Palm Springs. GPS has me going east on 58, south on 395 to Interstate 15/215 to Interstate 10. Alternative is Interstate 5 south to 210 east to 10 east.
I've done the I 5 route, never tried the other. Sure would like to avoid LA area traffic. Any thoughts?

I have tried all the routes in my 15+ years traveling to AZ. The absolute best route in terms of better scenery, avoiding the crowded freeways, and crazy drivers is:
East on Hwy-58 (I am assuming you are overnighting at Orange Grove RV Parl - great oranges!
Stay on Hwy-58 to I-15 north outside of Barstow (yea you are on the freeway but for only a couple of miles.
At Barstow go south on Hwy-247 to Lucerne (the 247 cafe is a great lunch spot)
At Lucerne (after lunch), Hwy-247 turns east at the intersection and so should you.
At Yucca Valley, Hwy-247 dead ends into Hwy-62. Turn right on Hwy-62.
Hwy-62 dead ends into I-10 just west of Palm Springs. Go east on I-10 to your destination.

I second this route. Enjoy the scenery.

I am sure that your have been the the Spring's by now, but Hwy 58 to 395 would have been the way that I would have gone. Only thing I don't like on the trip is the right turn that you have to make a very sharp right turn on to 395, and there is a lot of 18 wheeler's on that route. Going interstate 5 to the 210 is all city driving. Lot's and lot's of traffic and people that don't know how to drive.

Yes, this trip was completed last year. I used the route suggested by Carl n Susan, worked just fine except for some steep downgrades, that's what tow/haul downshifts are for.
Will look at your route next time we go to Palm Springs, hopefully December/January.

I guess you haven't been that way recently. There is a new Hwy-58 freeway that bypasses the old intersection. Now you have an off ramp to get to Hwy-395. The best part is flying by there on the way to Barstow without that miserable stoplight and the inevitable line of trucks waiting for it to change.

Your right, we have not been thru there in about 10 years or so. WOW!! that great that they made 58 a real highway or I guess you can call it a freeway if you said there was an off ramp to 395. I always went to Las Vegas that way because 18 from Palmdale to Victorville was a 2 lane death trap. We saw a head on accident when a guy passing me up pulled out in to traffic. Both driver's were killed that day. The 210 wasn't finished at that time so I would go the 14 to Mojave and take the 58 to Barstow and then the 15 into Vegas.
