dodge diesel running rough

my 2005 dodge ctd with 109000 miles is running rough in low gears, starting out & up to 35mph. this is running solo, haven't towed for 18 months. does this sound like an engine problem, or a tranny problem? thanks, Ray

When was the fuel filter changed? If you haven't changed it recently that is the first thing I would check.

It's been 3 1/2 yrs & 17000 miles. I didn't think of that since it runs good in overdrive. I'll get the filter changed first. Thanks, Ray

Good advice. When a diesel is running rough, the first, easiest and cheapest thing to do is change the fuel filter. If you have some bad or partially bad fuel, you might have to change it more than once.

But still like he said I only runs rough at low RPMs but at higher you might not feel it. I still would change the filter. That is the cheapest easiest thing you can do.

Uhhh, Dodge has only one filter? My Ford has two... make sure you get them all. Hope you still have the owner's manual to verify how many your truck has, or maybe someone else with an '05 Dodge with your same engine can verify.

got the fuel & air filter changed today, took it on a test drive, still running rough in lower gears. runs smoother once I get to 45mph. could it need tranny band adjustment? any other thoughts or suggestions before I take it to dealer. My original dealer has a great diesel mechanic that I trust. Thanks, Ray

Suggestion, yes take it to someone that has the equipment and expertise to diagnose the problem. At this point there is no need to waste money replacing parts. You have replaced the cheap stuff that might have helped. They probably needed to be replaced anyway. Now there is no need to throw money at it.

Good suggestion. Be thankful that your truck doesn't have 2 fuel filters like mine. Cost me $222.48 at dealer to get them changed.

The problem turned out to be my universal joint going bad. Dealer replaced it, truck runs great.I never heard or felt noise, just a rough ride, mainly during acceleration. Ray
