Custer, South Dakota

We will be visiting the Custer, South Dakota area in early June.
Any suggestions on RV parks to favor / avoid?

There are several listed in the on line sites - but if you have experience - pro or con - comment would be appreciated.

We stayed at "Rafter J Bar Ranch" when we were there. Very nice place, just make sure to make reservations as this place is popular.

We second Rafter J Bar Ranch. Great central location to Mt. Rushmore(8 mles) Custer SP, CrazyHorse Memorial (12 miles), Hill city is only 3 miles to good grocery shopping. If you are in the area be sure to have dinner at The Alpine Inn..$10.95 for a 12oz Filet Mignon, Salad, Baked Potaoes and Vegetable and the desset selection is to die for. The only serve 2 items for dinner...small or large serving of filet. Have fun. We spent 4 months in the area last summer and had a great time. Teresa

We stayed at Rafter-J several years ago and it was a very nice campground with spacious sites.

We stayed at Rafter J at the end of August last year and got to meet Dave and Teresa.

It is a very nice park and centrally located for the area attractions.

Two "hidden" treasures in the area are: Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument.

We stayed at the Custer KOA a couple years ago and it was at that time one of the worst Campgrounds we have ever been at. It might be better now but I would look before choosing that one.

We stayed at Custer State Park, nice spots. Every afternoon the Big horn sheep heard would come and graze in the campground sometimes as close as 20 feet away. We would stay there again, close to Mt.Rushmore and scenic drives in the park.

I live in the area and am presently work kampimg at the HILL City Mt. Rushmore KOA. this is a large campground with lots of activity's. the Rafter is an excellent campground also. I'm not sure what discounts they may offer. Article in the paper last week said that Custer State Park is full for all the weekends up thru the 4th. Just check with the campgrounds or CSP to make sure you can get in. The hills are lush and green again this year.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and comments.

We are in the South Dakota area now and staying at a fine RV park in Spearfish - Chris's Camp. Great Hosts - nice facilities.

Had a chance to tour the Custer parks today - second all the comments.

Thank You all!!

Last year we stayed at Fort Welikit and really enjoyed the place. Pretty close to town also.
