Hearst Castle vicinity

About 6 miles south of the little town of San Simeon is the California State Park of the same name.

It consists of two parts: One portion of it is near the ocean. Maybe a couple of hundred yards from the ocean. Spaces are fairly large and well spaced. The roads are all paved and in good condition. There is a lot of grass as well as many small trees and bushes. Clean flush toilets with showers. I believe some of them have hot water. I don't know because we used our Montana shower. There are several "handicapped" type camp sites.

The lower campground is relatively flat once you descend the hill from the check-in station. There is a dump station and a CG host. To get to the ocean there are a couple of trails that lead from the CG under a bridge on Hwy 1.

The upper CG is more primitive and located about a mile away on the top of a hill. No grass and few mature trees or bushes. They have many planted but they are very recent plantings.

Again the sites are large and well spaced. If anything you would have a bit more space in this section.

There are no flush toilets. Only the vault style. All looked very nice and clean. Most if not all were accessible. Even though it is on the top of a hill it is relatively flat. Roads are gravel but in good condition. While much further from the ocean this section offers some excellent views. We stayed at the lower section this time but would not hesitate to stay in the upper section.

The park was full even during the week or almost full. We were there just after the Labor Day week-end. Reservations are a must during season and not a bad idea in off season. The Central Coast has become a very "hot" spot to visit. The views along Hwy 1 are magnificent. And of course there is the Hearst Castle one can visit.

Located just south of the park is the charming little town of Cambria. Bring lots of $$$$$ to do anything in this little place. :-)

If you're looking for a nice CG by the ocean on the Central Coast then this is a park to visit. Enjoy... HamRad
