Pack Rats

We're currently at The Ranch in Lakewood, NM and since we use the Prius to get around the truck is in storeage on the edge of the desert. Pack rats live out there and I don't want them in my engine compartment. In the past I've always used moth balls in panty hose hung around in there. Some folks like Cab Fresh and others say it doesn't work on rats. What do you use when you need to keep the rats out.

Friends in placitas nm have real problem with pack rats and they just leave hood open, which keeps them out of the engine compartment. John

Pack rats are a significant problem at McDowell Mountain Regional Park outside Fountain Hills AZ. The camp hosts (and frequent guests) recommend a drop light on the ground under the engine. The pests are nocturnal and the light keeps them away.

True and we do that with the rig and the Prius, but the storage area is way too far from any electricity.

Dick, when we were at Organ Pike most vehicles had their hoods open about a 12-18 inches. I was told that would keep the pack rats out. If I was going to do that in storage I would put a block of wood near the latch with a ratchet strap to hold it down. That way the wind would not take the hood off.

Rats, mice, squirrels, or something chewed the wires and vacuum hoses of my 2007 F350 four different times to the tune of about $400 each time. Tried mothballs and fox urine. Neither worked. Found a product called Critter Ridder at Home Depot. Sprayed it on all the wires and hoses every couple months and never another problem.

Apparently that truck had the wiring made with a soy based insulation that turned out to be a problem with regard to such critters. We do have a lot of squirrels at home. Daughters vehicle that is always parked next to mine and my current 2012 F350 have not had the same problem.

Soy based unsulation was a problem there for a while. Even underground power lines were getting bit by moles. Like many good ideas they just hadn't considered all the consequences.
