Shower dome

I have noticed our shower dome has begun to "yellow" much like some headlight lenses you see out and about...has anyone heard of one of those headlight restoration "kits" being used to restore the shower dome??? If so, is there any danger to the rubber roof from whatever chemical is in the restoration kit?? Thanks.

I dont know of anyone who has tried the headlight kit. I did replace a outer Shower Dome, because of crack, not yellowing, and I paid around $50.00 for it. Only hard part was removing the old caulk. I would be careful with any chemicals around that rubber roof. Believe the 3M restoration kit goes for $25-$29 and is supposed to be one of the better ones on the market.

Thanks for the info...something else to add to the "to do" list after we arrive at our site in Maine.

We don’t use the sky light; we removed the inside cover and filled in with a layer or two of material stuffing lined with aluminum foil on the top. We did this in order to keep the light & heat from coming in, which it does help in that area very well. One of the things we hate is getting caught underneath a street light or having the sun beaming in on us in the early morning. If we had a choice we probably wouldn’t have a sky light at all. We haven’t noticed any kind of yellowing; I doubt it would turn colors with it covered. If it changed colors on the outside we haven’t noticed it.

Not an answer to your question, but while you are gazing up at the shower dome ... get a small roll of 1" bubble wrap. Remove the inner lense above the shower stall(a few screws)and place a couple of layers of bubble wrap in-between the outer and inner lense, then button it back up. You'll be amazed at how well this cuts down on heat transfer!

We "installed" a sliding shade (cost of $60) to deal with the heat, and mostly the light at night. Works very well for us.

I doubt if you will do any harm with the headlight restoration kit. You have nothing to loose by trying. If you want to try something less aggressive, Maguires make a Plastic Polish and Plastic Cleaner. It was all I ever used on my aircraft windscreens and side portals, and it did an excellent job. No matter what you use, if you are successful, a follow up with Aerospace 303 will help to keep it from returning to the yellow state prematurely.

I went to Lowes and bought a piece of vinyl J Channel. Loosened the screws holding the inside trim piece of the dome and slid the long edge of the J channel between the dome trim and the ceiling on 3 sides mitering the two corners. Cut a piece of 1/8" plywood to fit in the channel and painted it white to match the trim and the ceiling. Was suppose to put a drawer knob on it for ease of removal but since we never take it down I see no need for that. Total cost about $6. Jim

I keep mine coated with Protect All several times a year. For the inside, a have a foam board about 1/2" thick that squeezes into the frame to keep out sun/cold. The fit is tight enough that it stays by itself. When not in use, it stores in the closet.

I used the headlight restore kit, two step, first polish and clean then step two sealer and it looks brand new once again.
