I put a 2" foam pad (Walmart) UNDER the matress after cutting it to size and surprisingly it seems pretty firm and comfortable and the bed closes fine. Grand kids (16 yr olds) slept on it for a few days without complaints. Of course-kids could sleep on a picket fence without complaints!

We used a small piece of aluminum. We removed the mattress, placed the aluminum across the two frame rails and secured with self tapping screws and placed the mattress back on the frame. The bed shuts correctly with the aluminum and you cannot feel the dreaded bar. We have two inch memory foam on top of that, but do not shut the coach with the foam on top. The foam makes the bed perfect. We store the foam under the couch in the bunk room. Hope this helps.
