Found out why you guys up north have engine heaters

And/or use diesel anti gel additives. 4 below zero here in north Texas Tuesday morning and truck would not start. After it “warmed up” into mid 20’s next day it started fine. Not supposed to do that here. Last time below zero was over 30 years ago. And the -4 was lowest since the 1940’s.

Yup. I discovered i had a block heater in my F350 Lariate. Yesterday tried to start it three times. No joy. Read the owners manual. They talked about some option with block heaters. Today went out and found the plug in under the bumper. Plugged it in for an hour. Went back out and it fired right up

Block heaters is your friend, I use an all in one additive all year long. I had no issues starting at -12 the other day here in North West Arkansas.

Another winter problem is DEF, which freezes at 12F.

DEF may freeze at 12F, but most systems have a heater for that purpose. At least my last 2 Fords did, states so in the manual.

True, but in order to work, the heater must be on which it would not be for unforecast cold and an early morning departure when parked outside.

-8 for the high here the other day, and -18 when we woke up. Truck was in the garage over night (about 20 in the garage), but I left the truck outside all day at work, and it didn't have any issues starting, or any DEF issues or codes.

In our region, diesel is treated to -10 (at least the station that I buy it from), and I had put some Howes in there, just to make sure, but I normally don't run Howes at all. Normally, we don't get down to -10 for lows, let alone -10 for highs!!!

Up here in Wisconsin we don't start to count the temp till it hits at least -15, a couple of days ago we hit a balmy -26, now that will put hair on your chest!

Chevy and GMC have heaters. I time myself and fill it the last time in December and it slowly goes down in volume to March.

Between block, DEF and seat heaters, winter fuel, even mirror heaters so far my '11 Ford has always done its thing well below zero. What it doesn't do fast enough is put out heat through the usual 'heater' since mine doesn't have a steering wheel warmer - and my hands get cold

In upstate NY on the usually frozen tundra, so far the coldest we have seen lately was +15F and it went up to +32F yesterday. Talk about a climate inversion this week. Our Texas daughter and family got power and water yesterday after 4 days but there is no food in San Antonio markets but they were prepared, and knowing her well, for anything up to nuclear attack. The other two - oh well!

I was referring to the DEF heater, not the engine block heater, which I also have. The DEF heater is an electrical element that works when ignition is turned on. Almost like glow plugs.

Don't forget the steering wheel heater. This is the best invention ever!! My 2019 F350 has it and I use it all the time. Wife's 2017 Escape has it that is where I got the idea to have it on my 2019.
