Battery charging

The 12 volt battery on my 2005 Montana doesn't charge up when the electric is plugged in. As a matter of fact it goes dead if I don't unhook it when parked and the electric is plugged in. Any suggestions?

Sounds like your converter is no longer working correctly.

Are you talking about not charging when it's plugged into the tow vehicle? If so, give us a hint on what tow vehicle you have. Some, like certain years of GM trucks have a fuse that must be plugged in to get power to the trailer.

I'm pulling it with a 2015 1 ton Silverado and it's charging fine on that. It's being sucked dry while it's parked in my yard plugged into 110. The battery is brand new installed at the dealer where I bought the rig 1 month ago. I can bring it back to the dealer but we plan on taking off camping in 2 days so I'm hopping that it's something that I can fix.

I'm sure you checked the fuses for the converter. Unusual that it would charge with TV but not the 110v. Let us know what you find.

Fuses for the converter? I'm not sure what you're talking about. All the fuses in the converter are good but I didn't know that one of them was for charging the battery. Please tell me more and thank you for the information.

The convert has two functions. First, when plugged in it converts 110 to 12v for the 12v applications. Second it serves as a battery charger to keep your battery at full charge. Based on what your describing, if all the fuzes are good, you have a failed converter. What is most likely happening is that the converter isn't doing either of it's two jobs. As a result all of your 12v functions such as controls for the refrigerator, propane and other detectors, 12v lights etc are running off the battery which in turn is not being recharged.

exactly right. I had the same problem described and it was the converter, although I also thought initially it was the battery.

Like most if not all converters they have reverse polarity fuses, usually 4 of them or at least 2. If somehow these have blown then you will neither charge the battery nor create 12V for the items in the RV that use 12V (most everything).

If you disconnect the battery and plug into 110V and the converter is working you will have lights and all those items that run off 12V will work, if they don't then either the reverse polarity fuses are blown or the converter is Caputt...

Pretty easy to determine if the converter is gone or not. Good luck

Or, to check one other item that sometimes is overlooked, check the circuit breaker in the 120 volt side of the panel. There IS a circuit breaker for the converter in there, usually a 20 amp one. Sometimes they forget to label it though......!

Joe, there are two 40 amp fuses in the converter. On the new units they are next to the other fuses. In older units, I believe you must pull the converter out, but I'm not sure about that.

In 2005 there wasn't a battery disconnect.
