Replacement for ATS PD52DCSD

Hello to all, after 6 months of new Monty ownership my ATS started failing after running my generator only a few times losing one leg of shore power. I have read about this on many posts and so far I have been able to get shore power back by tapping on the outside of ATS metal box. I am looking to upgrade to a different quality/model and will have my dealer do replacement...(still under warranty). Maybe Keystone will/can refund me for the difference in dollars...don't know yet have not contacted them. My question: any recommendation for replacement models/brands. What advice can you give for handling the warranty seeking the extra expense. I understand the PD52DCSD are no longer being produced for lack of parts according to Progressive Dynamics phone call today. I am new to posting and have received great advise on a previous post question...so thanking you all in advance, Steve

As with many other RV owners the Progressive Dynamics PD52 transfer switch quit working. The dealer where I purchased the unit said that this was a common problem with this switch and that Keystone severed their contract for this particular switch. He also said that he would recommend an upgrade. I was credited for the labor and the price of the PD52 transfer switch, but I had to pay for the price difference between the old and new units. I had a Surge Guard 40350RVC3 unit installed as a replacement. So far no issues since the repair and replacement.

Trout30,

I too use a Watchdog so when my PD52DCSD dies I'll replace with an ATS without the EMS functions. I'll probably go with a DC coil type ATS for quieter operation.

Thanks to both of you who replied. Now I will know what to ask for and expect from my dealer. Good info on the ATS without EMS when owning a WatchDog. Didn't think of that. I might go with one of the Southwire upgrades anyway just for double protection or encase my WatchDog disappears one day.

My service center replaced my ATS PD52DCSD under warranty with a Southwire Surge Guard Model 41261. (Transfer switch with reverse polarity protection).

So far so good for me, although it's only been about 2 months.

Hey Todd, thanks for the info. Did your dealer consider that model an equal replacement or did you pay extra?

I did try to ask about it, but they didn't give me much information other than saying this is what they manufacture provides as a replacement. I do know that the new one has about a 30 second delay on it when you first connect it. I believe this has something to do with the surge protector that is built in. They did not charge me anything, as this was the replacement they provided under my 1 year warranty.

Trout30, the only reason (unless you have a hardwired generator) that they are putting in the transfer switch is the EMS capability. The Southwire seems to be a good unit. However, the Watchdog is a better EMS with Bluetooth capability to monitor power. Four of us with Super Solar at rally paid to have the better EMS installed hardwired. Very happy so far. I will caution that the Watchdog is like a neon sign saying “take me” if you are using the pedestal version. Just my $.02. YMMV.

My June-built 3120rl came with the same unit Todd has. It has a red alert light in the cabinet with the fan control panel. When I first got it I contacted Southwire and the guy that called me from my "question" didn't even know the product existed, saying the 41260 not 261 is what I have, lol.

I have found their online PDF which is very vague for a person that wants to know what the surge protection actually entails. Most real surge protectors are sacrificial, even the bulldog, I believe, have replaceable fuse-like modules once it see's and protects our rigs. I hate to rely on a unit the manufacturer fails to explain in details, maybe I should ask again, maybe they now know details of the unit.

I am tempted to just purchase the Bulldog, but I would like to justify the up-costs before condeming the Southwire, then finding out it is, or isn't, a good unit for surge protection. I did have the southwire protect me twice, so I believe it isn't a sacrificial unit....
