This sucks. I try to buy fuel at popular fueling stations. I don't go to truck stops because they are so expensive. Now I have a fuel card and when we get to travel again I will give it a try. There should be a valve in the fuel filter so you can drain out the water. When the light comes on I wouldn't drive very far before I drain some of that out of there. Water will differently blow up the HPFP that's why there is a fuel separator.

I prefer truck stops, high turn over on fuel and with the EFS card from TSD the price is really really good, I saved a ton. Plus easy in and out. My truck popped a check engine light too. Engine power reduced. Onstar told me to stop but the truck told me to keep driving. The truck would not complete a regen had to take in, a few hours later done. Question is will it go into regen next time...? I’m dealing with GMC now....

Drain the fuel filter, if you haven’t already. Water is a huge problem for these high pressure fuel systems. The operate at up to 30,000 PSI and will NOT tolerated water. It will ruin the in short order at the cost for you of $8000 +. Don’t drive it anymore until it’s fixed. Your warrant will not cover the damage. It’s considered abuse.

The dealership is trying to figure out what to do? I would get it out of there. Change filters, purge fuel tank, problem solved.

No diesel mechanic at Charlotte dealer? Not sure what to do on GM but on Ford it's easy to drain water off the filter/separator on the underside. I agree that I would go elsewhere though.

wow, i guess dump fuel, change filter, put treatment in tank and a few gallons, that would be my next thing to do.

maybe disconnect batteries to reset computer????

try getting a ford under warranty in key west. nearest ford dealer that does diesels is 100 up the keys.

GA to Charlotte is a very long way to limp along with bad fuel. The damage has already been done. It is out of his hands sadly now. The dealer has the vehicle and no matter what, they will not release it without a resolution. Warranty is shot depending on the analysis of the fuel system internal components. Remember the other threads about the fuel system issues and a little rust on one component voided the warranty. 8k to 10K + for repairs.

This is very bad news and I'm sorry. Your alternative is to save your receipt. Go back to the station and fill a 5 gallon can with fuel and send it out for analysis. Then you can file a lawsuit against the fuel station. Lawyers and time. I'm sure others will take the same route. But you know the service station will say you made a pit stop and someone did it to your fuel tank and they will claim immunity.
I am extremely sorry for the difficulties you are having.

I would not wish this on anyone for any reason. I wish you the all the best for an awesome outcome and a speedy repair. I know someone who actually got their truck insurance to cover it under vandalism.

Jerome make sure you look at the sample as they take it from the truck. don't just let them tell you there is water in there. I have seen dealerships not warranty stuff like this because they are pulling a fast one. They make more money from a customer than the manufacturer for warranty repairs.

I agree with uhjtx you might get your insurance company to pay for this. People have got insurance to pay under comprehension. You should have got a water in fuel message. If it’s not working there is a very small chance Ford might pay but I wouldn’t count on it.

You can put all the fuel additive in it you wont to but the water is still there and still doing damage. If the fuel pump is bad there will be medal shaving in the injectors so they are also bad. The high pressure fuel lines are one time use so they will haft to be replaced.

I would go back to that station and get 5 gallons of fuel rent a car if you haft to. I would get a NEW diesel fuel can, keep the receipt and take pictures while you fill the can. Have the fuel tested if it’s clean keep it to your self. I’m not saying to cheat someone. They could have got more fuel by now. Time is not on your side.

Like uhjth I’m am truly sorry and I wish you luck.

The very reason we do use truck stops for fueling when on the road. They turn over a lot of fuel and the risk is much less that you will get bad fuel. We never have in 14 tears of being on the road.

Well for starters that sucks about the situation, but how does a dealership not have a diesel mechanic?

EFS card from TSD gives them access to your bank account. More chance to get hacked. Love the idea of getting clean diesel fuel but not at the risk of my bank account. Use high traffic stations of major brands and Gas Buddy app to find those large enough to support 5r traffic.

A couple years ago I had a similar problem in my F350, stopped in WV at a travel plaza but I filled up on the auto side not the truck side. Pulling a hill the truck shut down and said reduce speed and I pulled over let it sit started it and continued on.it did it about 3 times limping my way back to PA. The next day I drained the water separator and there was no water in it, changed the filters and have not had the problem since the only warning message I got was low fuel pressure during the whole thing so now I carry a spare set of filters

First to the OP, water in fuel totally sucks. Best wishes on a quick resolution.

As for the EFS card from TSD, it was suggested to me that I set up a separate account, just for the fuel purchases, to support the card. Protects my main checking account.

Separate account for fuel only - not linked to my other accounts. Making sure they're not linked is important. I've been hacked and my stupid bank kept linking new acts. to closed hacked account. Didn't cost me anything but a lot of aggravation before I figured out what the bank was doing to me. Not mentioning any names, Sells Cargo. Save big $$ with TDS card at truck stops with big fuel turnover.

I'm driving a 2019 GMC 2500 and just TODAY had a recall fixed on regen system. But I'm sure GMC would have known if that might be your issue. Good luck!

Add a lift pump with water separater and additional fuel filter. This is 600 bucks well spent.

welcome to the world of diesels. I offered the one suggestion but I also had a problem in Key West a few years ago and the nearest dealer that had a diesel mechanic was 100 miles north.
Diesels are great but when they go bad it sometimes is a pain to find someone.
