Rim and Tire Size Change

I need to replace my 15" tires on my Monte 298RLS. Some of my friends have replaced 15" with 16" and used LT tires instead of ST tires. I would like some opinions and any information from anyone who has made this or similar conversions.

As long as you have the room for the larger tire the conversion should work fine. This would give you a tire with extra safety margin. It won't let you carry more since the axles probably aren't rated any higher than you old tires.

While researching the possibility of upgrading the 16" wheel to a 17.5" one so LR "H" tires might be fitted I came across this site. I needed to know more about off-set as the rim I was using was a 17.5 Dexstar with the same bolt pattern and spacing as the 16" rim on the Montanna. The tire was the Michelin XPS Rib which has the same outside diameter as the G614 16" GY tire which was another alternative. Two other factors were at issue, the size of the studs and the centre bore. I decided the G614 was all the safety margin I needed so dropped the idea of upsizing the rims so never reached a conclusion but it is an interesting thought. BTW tire width at the bead should be within the range specified for the rim. From what I have read deviating too much can contribute to sidewall damage/deterioration.

As Roger pointed out, there are many factors to consider when changing tires/wheels. Stud size, spacing, center bore, rim width and offset. I would assume that the 15' wheels have 5 studs, are there any 16" wheels like this? If not changing over would be expensive. If the offset is much different you could have a tire rubbing somewhere. As far as wheel width goes it is important to have that properly sized to the tire you want to use in order to get proper tread wear.
