Camera's

Did a search and didn't find anything. Just curious, I have noticed some really good pictures posted, what kind of camera's are used by MOC, point and shoot, SLR's, etc. Brand strengths and weaknesses. I have an older Kodak 6mp point and shoot, and a Canon SX40, 12.1mp point and shoot with alittle extra, great telephoto len, really nice video, not the greatest in low light. I think Ozz should have a professional photographer follow him around, just think of everything he could get done if he didn't have to stop and photo document everything for us.

Here is what I use: Nikon Coolpix S6100. I dropped one hiking, the lens-curly deal doesn't close without forcing it, so I bought a slightly used one on Ebay for $60.00, don't know what I paid at Walmart for the other one, probably around $160-ish. I got a camera case for hiking and it hangs on a D-ring with myGPS, lightweight and easy to use. Wish it cycled quicker.. Also impossible to see what I am focusing in on in sunlight, that part is worthless..

$$ for $$, the Casio Exilim 7.2mp and 10.1mp are excellent (and inexpensive) cameras however you can't go wrong with any of the recent brands and models of point and shoot cameras IMHO.

Cannon power shot SX120. Got it at a pawn shop and it has great macro, can get to about 1" with it

Ozz I like the Kodak for a hip carrier, the canon is alittle bigger, I was really looking at the Nikon Cool Pix, it came down to the SX and the Cool Pix. What is funny is that I use the little flex tripod(which is handy for video with the 35X) or I have a huge spotting scope tripod, and the camera looks like a tick on an elephants back. Still trying to sort out the new camera, I really am a point and shoot guy. Allen, have you had any problems with the SX150, any quirks I need to look for on the Canon?

I just use the camera in my I-phone. Takes really nice high quality pictures for my use and I always have a phone with me than too.

Boils down on how much money you want to spend. I have been shooting photos since high school. Back then we used film. Now days with the digitals, you can go crazy taking pictures. I know on an Alaska cruise, before digital, I shot 36 rolls of film. Most of the camera brands today are good, the bigger the name, the more money. I prefer to use a SLR camera and have a Cannon EOS Rebel T1i. I like looking through the lens to shoot pictures. It came with a normal lens and a telephoto. I bought a Tamron 18-270mm lens. Very versital. Normal to zoom in one lens. I also have a Nikon Cool Pix, it is smaller than my cell phone. Each of these cameras take very good pictures. If you are new to photography, take a class or find someone that can show you how to get the most out of your camera and to take pictures.

Thanks GregN, I, am a lot like you. I have shot film for years, still do, old Pentax K1000 with more lens and filters then I want to carry. I have been looking at the EOS and lens adapter to use some of the lenses I have. Currently I just don't think I need the abilities of the SLR, but that could change quickly.

When I'm planning on taking pictures I use my Sony Alpha. I picked the Sony because in my film days I had a couple of high dollar Minolta's. Sony bought Minolta and so all my old auto focus lenses work with the Sony. It's as good as a Nikon or Cannon, but I probably wouldn't go out an buy one if I was starting from scratch because it's easier to find used Nikon or Cannon lenses cheap than ones for the Sony. I carry with me everyday both my Iphone and a Nikon Cool Pix S9200 (currently on sale on Amazon for $149 until they run out). The Cool Pix takes almost as good pictures as the Sony. It will do Macro, but at times on tiny flowers is hard to lock on focus, and it has great wide angle and telephoto abilities. It also weighs very little and drops in any pocket on my vest or shorts. It's being cleared out because the new hot thing is the S9300 which is the same camera but with GPS built in also. I didn't need that, I'm still barely able to remember where I took the pictures, and I sure didn't want to spend twice the money for basically the same camera. Anyway, I'm already selling greeting cards the little bugger took.

It comes down to "how serious are you". As stated anything from an I-phone to a high end Digital SLR camera can be used. If you go the DSLR you could spend thousands on lenses. Then after you spend all this money on the DSLR and lenses people leave the camera in auto, now you have a very expensive point and shoot. IMHO. So buy what you can afford and how much dedication your willing to put into it. For my wife and i we use Nikon equipment, we have a D80 and a D7000, with about 6 different lenses. Presently we have about 30,000 photos on our computer.
