Legacy Disc Brakes slow release.

New member with a 2021 3121RL Legacy. New unit, early October ,with about 600 miles of towing and I'm having issues with the disc brakes. Pulling with a 2015 Ram 3500
The disc brakes after being applied delay in releasing for about 2-3 seconds. Makes it difficult when backing in or in traffic. I have check and reset the trailer type and set the gain from .5 to 5 with no change. 0 gain does work but the brakes do not. Any help appreciated. Have called Dexter twice but no return calls as of of today. Montana has not offered any help as yet,one call and a chat to them. Thanks

This one is simple
You just need to take the trailer back to the dealer and have them take a look at it. It could be the truck causing the problem or the trailer. Something is not turning off the power to the brakes on the trailer.

Thats an interesting issue. Id check a few things. If its a legacy with disc brakes, check to see if there is a "Electric over Hydraulic" setting on your trucks brake controller.

Second, some trucks have the auto brake feature such as when pulling out of a boat ramp to hold the brakes for 3 seconds to give you time to go from park to drive and start pulling up the ramp. Both my ram and jeep have this and they are close to the same year as your truck. See if thats on, and maybe a way to shut it off? I have never had issues with that feature though.

Id start there,
Ren

Thanks for the info. I'll check the hold feature. Brakes are set on electric over hydraulic heavy. I tried the other three settings all with the same result, slow release.
Dexter did contact me and thought the brake lines/ tank may have debris. They suggested drain all of the fluid and refill. If this fails to help replace the the E/H pump.
Working today with Keystone Montana to try to get a mobile brake service to the rig.

You might try disconnecting from the truck and use the brake away switch to help identify wether the problem is the truck or the trailer. Raise a wheel off the ground and then have someone pull and then reinstall the break away pin and then see how long it takes before you can rotate the wheel. You may need to do this for each wheel if there is an obstruction affecting one wheel only.

Steve-- Since this is a NEW 2021 unit and you have talked to Keystone I would let them handle it by finding a mobile service tech to check this problem out. You have got some good suggestions and if you have talked to Dexter and Keystone you are on the right track. You don't say whether you are close to your dealer that you bought it from or not but I suspect you are not since Keystone is trying to find a mobile service tech. You also do not tell us whether you are in fulltime living in the unit or using it as a weekend or short time camper. Good luck on this problem and please post on what has been found to be the problem.

On my Ford truck the feature to hold brakes, or engine idle for incline, is call Hill Assist. I have a button on the dash to turn this on/off if that's the problem.
I'm thinking debris in the line may be the problem or a collapsed rubber hose. My wife's expedition had this problem and I just replaced both rubber brake lines at the front wheels to fix it.

I don't know if your 2015 Ram has it or not but we have it on our 2018 3500 Ram it's a brake hold function for hills that you can turn on or off. if you have it.It mite be in the on potion and kipping the brakes on for just a second.

Will try this. Have had the brake fluid drained , refilled and bleed the four disc brakes. Montana agreed to cover the cost after I found a mobile service to do the work .

Did find large gouges / nicks on both driver side rotors. Dexter is checking on this. Montana has recorded the issue but thinks it is OK.

New 3121RL Legacy Disc Brake Rotors

I tried to attach a photo of one of the two rotors that are nicked up. What do you think?
Thanks

While that may stop your rig, they most definitely bad, or bad from the factory. If you had rotors on your car like that, a shop would want to turn them.

I have the same set up and I set my brakes at 3.5 and find this quite good. At 5.5 I was locking up occasionally and yes it took time to release from lock up.

Looks more like porosity rather than nicks. Problem with porosity is that it is visible on the surface, but you don’t know what may be sub-surface. Porosity should never be present in a rotor, looks like some cost saving process in use.
Needs to be replaced, I will be checking mine.

Those rotors are junk. I cant believe Montana would install those and send a unit out the door. Send that picture to Keystone. They will be interested in seeing them for sure. Rotors dont nick.

Thanks , Dexter is looking at replacement for both rotors and the e/h pump. I have the gain set at 3.5 (never have locked up the disc brakes) but the disc still are slow to release. I have had the brake fluid drained and air purged but it did not improve the slow release. Montana did not think the rotors needed to be replaced but Dexter does.
Thanks for everyone replies so looks like off to the repair shop for a long wait, at least its going to be winter.

Yea, I have never seen rotors that look like that. Looks like someone beat them up with the claw end of a hammer.

What truck are you towing with (fill out your sig) so everyone will know.

I know for fact that some ford/GM trucks do not recognize the brakes and need a special electric over hydraulic actuator module to make them work properly. Its a HydraStar HBA-CAM 381-7073.
