anyone gone thru the Chesapeake tunnel to VB

In a couple of days we will be driving from Coatsville, PA to Virginia Beach, VA, and it has us routed to go thru the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Hwy 13. It says the clearance is 13' 6" It looks like semis are driving thru it on Google maps? Just wondering if any of you have gone thru there, or is there a better route to take? Thanks

Drive it often. Just stay in your lane and drive 5 or more miles under the speed limit.

rjdreyer, have you taken your Montana thru it many times? Just wondering about the height clearance.

I have traveled through it about ten times. I measured my height clearance as 13'4". The last time I went through a height sensor tripped at the toll booth. An inspector came out and physically measured the RV. It was fine and they allowed me to continue. You must have your propane turned off.

Just went through it last October, heading to the Talladega race. I was kind of white knuckled while driving through the tunneled portions since it is one lane each direction with tractor/trailers coming at you. Glad I have a dually and not a SRW truck. I felt no movement at all.

As far as height concerns, any road that the big rigs can travel on, you can too. Not exactly sure, but I think the minimum bridge/tunnel clearance is 14 foot or so. you will be fine.

By the way I think it was $22 to go through + some other BS toll in Virginia that I got a bill for in the mail since I do not have an EZ pass.

I assume you are going down Rt 13?

If you've never been that way before, its a really peaceful drive, just watch your speed, especially going thru the little hamlet town.

There are a couple of campgrounds along Rt 13 before the bridge/tunnel, A KOA and Kiptopeke State park. Haven't stayed at the KOA, but it gets good reviews, Kiptopeke State park is just an open field, but the sites are HUGE.
