Plumbing question

Ok I had to replace my Thetford toilet with a Dometic while further south this winter. Now at home I want to install a shut off valve. There are two angle valves that look the same but one is called a drain valve and the other a stop valve. Is the stop valve what I need? Also the type fitting for PEX is CTS? What is the toilet connection called? I'm guessing 3/4" NPS. Plumbing terminology is a language unknown to me.
Thanks for help

Paul,

I believe the difference between the drain valve and a stop valve is, the drain valve has a little cap on the side for draining the pipe out. The Stop valve just shuts off the water.

So, yes, you want the stop valve.

Not sure about the difference between PEX & CTS.

I would get a SharkBite fitting, easiest to install.

When I recently installed my Dometic 310 I installed a flex line with sharksbite type fitting on the shutoff valve on one end. It all came pre assembled, ie. not two pieces. Bought it at Home Depot. Took the first one back as it was for a toilet. Correct one was for a sink fitting. Go figure!!!

If you're just wanting a shut off valve below the toilet itself, Menards, Home Depot, or Lowes all carry an inline shut off valve (Sharkbite or similar brands). The water line is 1/2" (at least on mine) so cut it in two somewhere between the floor and the stool and slip the inline shut off between the two ends ... you're done. Here's just an example vendor ...

As DieselGuy says, I put plastic shark bite shut offs on all my faucets and toilet and they've held now for many miles. Shark bites are easy. I did them all in less than half an hour and most of that was spent trying to get my big shoulders in the hole.

My kitchen sink lines had a cut across them from the factory. It held for a month or so before it started leaking on one side. Since the cut went across the perfect solution was to simply install shut-offs where the damaged Pex was. I got the press on fittings/shut-offs from local box store and they held for about 2 days then started leaking again.

I called my plumber and he installed 2 Pex shut-offs to replace my cheap ones. It didn't cost me very much and it was fixed correctly. IMHO if you have all the right Pex tools to crimp fittings then fix it yourself, but I have never had much luck with the cheap press on ones.

Everyone has their experiences, but Sharkbite, John Guest, and Sea Tech come to mind right off hand as reliable vendors for what are widely called "push-loc" fittings. They seal by an oring and a friction washer. We use them by the hundreds out at my work place for both air and water up to 100 psi. The key is cutting the line square before pushing the fitting down onto it. If the 1/4" or so of line that goes into the fitting has any scratches or cuts ... cut it again to eliminate them. Here's a handy tool to cut plastic line square. They come in several sizes and configurations. It's not mandatory, but it sure makes life easier.

What is the reasoning for a shut-off valve to the toilet?

Some people have had bad experiences with the Thetford toilet water valve leaking, blowing off, etc. Peace of mind to just flip a valve when being gone from the fiver for a while

What went wrong with our Thetford. DW depressed lever to flush and the foot pedal came off. The flap wasn't open but the water was still running. The bowl was quickly filling and she was yelling at me to go out side and cut water off. I wasn't fast enough so she stuck hand into toilet and pushed flap open at last minute before over flow.

Thanks to all replies. I have my shut off valve installed . I found out if you order a ballcock fitting it will be too big for RV. You just need a straight sink type connection.

"... I found out if you order a ballcock fitting it will be too big for RV. You just need a straight sink type connection." Thanks for the great info.! Could you elaborate a bit more on the type of valve you used? I'm not sure what you meant by straight sink-type vs. a ballcock type. Thanks!

I made up a Pex repair kit shortly after getting my RV. I bought the crimp/cutting tool,1/2" & 3/4" clamps,a bunch of assorted 1/2" & 3/4" fittings and Pex tubing. I keep it all on board just in case a line blows or a fitting breaks. The initial cost was a few hundred dollars but well worth it.

The fitting I used was a Flair-it 1/2x1/2 swivel coupling p/n 88-9230.
