Progressive Industries 230-ADTP30 Cheater Box

Has anyone used one of these?

Cheater Box - Cheater box plugs into a 30 amp and 20 amp outlet, and provides 50 amp at the output. Requires two separate circuits and will not operate on a GFCI outlet. 1 year warranty. Model 230-ADTP30.

As Johnny 5 says... Need Input.

Many campgrounds will not let you use them.

John,
I have one and in four years have not had an opportunity to even try it. Every 20 amp outlet on a pedestal post that I have seen to date is GFCI protected, which makes sense since it is outside in the elements.

Yup, awaywego brings up a good point, that most CG posts that have both 30 amp & 20 amp connectors available but that doesn't mean they can both be active at the same time. If this is the case trying to use both will cause the power pole breaker to reset. The two connectors are provided as a convenience for trailers that have a 30 amp cord or a 20 amp cord.

My impression is that with shore power, if there isn't a true 50 amp plug then I won't try. I don't like to mess with my power source since so many things can go wrong. Trying to draw more than intended just doesn't seem like a good idea. But I'm not a power expert and not very adventurous (and mostly too poor to experiment).

When we were using a lot of older campgrounds that didn't have the 20-amp GFI receptacles, we used one every time. It won't upset your power, it just gives you more than 30-amps -- theoretically you will have 50 amps. However, it's more like 40 amps. But that's better than 30. There are some people who will say that these units may cause a problem with the RV's circuits but that's not true. If your unit is built for 50 amps you're good to go.

The reason we don't use our unit anymore is because I sold it to someone on this forum for his use the same way did. Also, we no longer visit any of the old county parks that didn't have the GFI receptacles. The newer parks and a lot of the older parks that have upgraded, all have GFI circuits now.
