Couch at the rear of a 3500rl

I have a 2006 - 3500rl and would like to replace the 2 rear recliners with a couch, however I only have a 32 inch depth and all the couches I've seen are 36 inches. Has anyone done this and where did you find the couch. Thanks - John

I think all couches are 36" deep to accomodate the average adult's rump and slope and still have a backing for the frame and upholstery. You might need something completely different that does not have the backing, like a trundle bed, a futon or a custom bench, or even a chaise lounge. The issue is the seat itself in trying to keep it more shallow than is typical then have a backing of some sort for comfort or risk seating space in that area.

We have a 2006 3400RL .We moved the recliners to where the couch was and moved the couch to the original recliner location. You have to be careful to not bump the rear window curtains and to not let the couch stick into the closing path of the #3 slide, but it's worked for 4000 mies so far. I made a heater vent deflector out of aluminum flashing and wood to allow the heat to flow from the vent to the living space. Our oem couch is about 34 inches deep, so if your space is truly 32 inches then the couch would not fit. Like I said, ours is a tight fit, but so far so good. Anything deeper than our 34 inch couch would not fit.

We have a 3455SA and switched the couch and recliners. When we want to retract the slides we flip the couch onto its back and strap it down to make room for the slides to retract.

and another fine example of MOC ingenuity and BRILLIANCE. That solution is indeed brilliant, since this has been discussed many times with no solution. Of course, some may not want to flip their couch, but it is nonetheless a fantastic idea!! No wonder I keep reading every post on this forum, one never knows what can be learned on any given day!!

We also swapped couch and chair location in our 3400 but I know the depth is not sufficient to do that in all models without some kind of modification.

Jwedell, we use an aftermarket home style sofabed that is a little bit bigger than most RV sofabeds. It would not quite let the slides retract in our 3400RL. Vicki came up with the brilliant idea of unscrewing the holddowns at the bottom of the drapes from the wall. They hang just fine with the holddowns still inside the drapes but not attached to the wall.. When ready to retract the slides she pushes the couch back against the wall. Unscrewing those holddowns gave us about an extra inch for clearance.

Sierra 117, that's a terrific idea. I don't think I've ever seen that solution, before.

Ditto on the couch flipping ! This solves a major issue we had with the layout and slide clearance. We were just dragging the couch to the back wall once we got to where we were going.

How heavy is the Air Bed Couch? I assume that it is lighter than a conventional sleeper couch.

Is it easy to flip? What keeps it from moving while you are driving?

We used to "flip" the couch whenever we moved because it was 1" too long. However, I found that if I leave the shade up a little and remove the curtain attachment at the bottom, it just fit with the slides in.

I know this was posted back in 2010 but good ideas are long lasting. I just did the same thing with my 3400RL. By unscrewing the curtain tiedowns and raising the shade to the top of the airbed couch I can now have the slides move in without touching the couch! Thank you. That allows me to fit our new La-Z-Boy Pinnacle recliners in the door slide side for better TV viewing and napping.
