Kitchen Shelf Collapse

I had a sack of sugar and a sack of flour on this shelf while traveling before Christmas. Here is the outcome. Has anyone reinforced their shelf with screws? I am going to look at this in a couple of weeks but starting to rethink all of hte shelf reinforcement. A flimsy little braid is not going to keep a shelf in the kitchen secure when traveling with groceries stocked.

Here are the pics...

I had a different shelf collapse, mine was above the hot water heater. (3400RL) I have pictures of the repair in Ozz's mods. I built a plywood shelf and added legs and supports. It was Cheap cheap cheap.

We had drawers built in ours because we needed some way of getting to the back of the pantry. Never had any shelves break there but we did over the cupboard. Put too many books up there and the top of the cupboard collapsed the first time out in 2000. Since then I've reinforced it, took the books down and built a bookcase for them.

We ended up putting in another set of those white baskets. Expensive, expensive, expensive, but real handy.

Shelves and drawers should be designed (and engineered) to be strong enough for their purpose. We have had to rebuild all but one of our drawers and three of our cupboards. Most of us put books in the rear overhead cupboard. Poor design and workmanship IMHO.

The white metal shelves are available at Home Depot or Lowe's. It helps to have a pair of bolt cutters.

Charlie, Don't tell me you need the bolt cutters to get the shelves out from Lowe's and Home Depot

Had to rebuild the rear bracket that holds the rear end of the silverware drawer and the three under it. Staples pulled out over the years, even to cheap to use some wood glue. This unit was not even fastened to the floor, it was just hanging on the ends of the drawer slides. I had to rebuild it through the drawer holes unless I wanted to take the counter top off. It is secure now and screwed to the floor

Charlie,

I assume you are talking about the white shelves at Lowes or Home Depot, not the drawers supplied by Keystone??

I could never find the drawers in the right size to fit in the cabinet, so I purchased these at the Montana dealer.

Robbie I wish I could put those in my unit. The cabinet I am having problems with is next to the stove. When you open the cabinet door the right side of the cabinet has a 2-4" recess. I am not up to completely ripping the counter out just yet. I am going to add under shelf bracing then legs which go to the floor on all 4 corners.

Don put corner molding on all the drawers on the Montana. On the back end of the drawer. Worked great.
