Hot Water Heater Noise

Does anyone know what could be causing a noise when water is going into the hot water heater?. This has just started this past week and we can not find a reason for it. Example: When we run the hot water, we hear a hissing/gurgling sound when either new water water goes into the tank or the hot water is coming out. When we turn the inlet by-pass on, the noise goes away. The noise does get quite loud but we sure can't find any reason for it. The heater works just fine.

Hi Helen, Sounds like you have an air bubble in there. Do you get air out the fauct when running only the hot water? Check around the hot water tank for leaks...and that its not over-heating the water generating air bubbles. Did you check under the trailer to make sure there isn't some sort of hot water piping leak? This should not be happening...as the outlet (hot side) is self purging...are you getting good hot water flow? Maybe the 3-way bypass valve is not completely turned to feed the hot water tank (slight cold bypass preventing all air from being purged)? Sorry, running out of ideas for you to check maybe others can add to this....

Helen,
I concur with Chuck. Sounds like an air bubble in your water heater. Over time use of hot water will eventually purge the bubble. If you want to get rid of it fast, open the hot water valve on the faucet furthest away from the water heater and let it run until water flows free of air. Then repeat on each faucet working to the faucet closest to the water heater.

The first time you use the water heater it must fill an empty void. That can cause air bubbles to form in the heater. I usually, when filling the fresh water tank for the first time in the season, will purge the water from the hot water tank using the procedure I defined above before firing the hot water heater with gas or electric. I also repeat the process if I remove the anode or drain the water heater for any reason during the season.

I hope this helps.

Tom

Hi Ours only makes noise when it is run on the electric side. No noise when on gas. Sound drives wife crazy so I get a break and don't have to do it all the time. Dan

We have the same sort of noise and it has been with us for months. Have burped the hot water heater several and nothing has changed. Sort of sounds like a restriction in the line, but can't find anything, so we just live with it.

Is it possible the tank is sweating - dripping onto the burner?
