RV Bed

We love our new fifth wheel but are not happy with the bed. They say it is an upgraded mattress but it is still not comfortable. We are considering a Sleep Number bed. Does anyone have one? If so, what are your thoughts? We appreciate any info because I hate to spend the $$ and then have issues.

Agree, mattress that came with our 2015 bad bad. We looked and decided against the sleep number. Put a three inch Serta foam topper on top and have been happy with that.

We have the Sleep Number Bed in our rig and love it! We have also had them in our house for many years before we went fulltime. We ordered it from Camping World as they had the RV King size with the rounded corners at the bottom.

One Additional Tip: If you travel through changing altitudes be sure to let out a little air in the mattress before going to higher altitude. The mattress will expand as you go higher and get softer as you go lower!

Forget the Sleep Number, not worth the cost. Walmart sells a 4" dual foam topper. We have a King size bed. The topper will be about 2" too wide and our mattress has rounded corners. A electric knife was used on the foam to size it. Now sleeps perfect. Wife put a nice Laura Ashley mattress cover over the cover that comes with the foam topper.

It is a Dream Serenity and was normal stock at our local store.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dream-Ser...opper/44578067

Our bed had 80lb struts to hold the bed up. After adding the topper, changed the struts to 120lb struts. Now wife can lift bed and it stays up with the extra weight of the topper and bedding.

Buy struts here

The problem with a air bed such as the sleep number is that in traveling you change altitudes. This causes the air bed to either deflate or inflate. Come down from 9000' to 5000' you are going to need either a generator or a campsite with electric to air it back up. At home, you bed does not change altitudes and the passing cold front is not a issue and you always have electricity. Been there-Sold it......

Memory foam here as well for the last 3 fivers. We have an air bed at home and quite frankly can't see a nickels worth of difference from the memory foam topper in the Montana ... plus I just can't part with the $$$$$ for an air bed for the RV ... Ha!

Try a 4 inch natural latex foam topper. Natural latex foam is a heavy dense foam so it will support you very well but it is also very soft so there are no pressure points. We have them in the house and camper. I call them my heaven on earth bed. I've had box springs and foam I think the latex is by far better. They are expensive about $100 per inch but you get what you pay for.

The bed that came with our Monty was BBAAAAADDDDDD. We tried a foam topper and the bed was a marshmallow. Was comical getting in and out of bed and very uncomfortsble. Sleep was bad...shoulder pain..tossing and turning. King Sleep Number was installed over the winter and it's a HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!! Highly recommend the Sleep Number. Had to expand the platform...just maximized the room we had with larger boards. We put the pump under the bed and drilled a hole in the side to get the cord thru. Don't need to keep the bed pump plugged in. I plugged it in once this year when the DW wanted to adjust her side.

FYI...Camping World puts them on sale every winter. Sometimes near Thanksgiving. I think the sale this past winter was in Dec or Jan. Our king SN Premier was $1362 in total. You can also get the SN RV
bed thru a SN store with their incentives. Camping World discount just made the most sense.

We also have a SN at the house.

We have two sleep number beds one in the Montana and one in the S&B. I do not see how anything can improve on the OEM mattress.

We've never taken the OEM mattress from the dealer since our first camper in the 1980's. Real mattresses for us. Current one is foam, coils, memory form and gel top.

Just an unintended consequence of a SN.....It is very light. Great if your bed is up front.

King sleep number. The wife and I differ so much that a regular mattress would mean someone would be uncomfortable. She sleeps at 35...I use 70, but there are times when I go down to 45-50. Always use rv parks, so power issue isn't. John

Just a note....you don't have to have a SN plugged in 100% of the time...just when you want to adjust, if there are severe temp or altitude differences to make needed adjustments. I think we plugged ours in once for all the nights of use this year.

I have sleep number in the house and both 5'ers had shoulder surgery a few years back and this is the only mattress that I can sleep on my side with. I have tried many different mattress's now the kids all have them. Good luck hope whatever you get it works for you.
