Aluminum Wheels

How many out there have had problems with the aluminum wheels leaking and what was your solution??? I have one that is giving me a problem and think it to be the wheel. I have been very careful with these wheels and they have never been over a curb, scrubbed or hit a major pot hole.

Charlie,
About four years ago I had one that had a hairline crack at the valve stem hole. It wouldn't hold air. The air continually leaked out overnight. No one would repair it because of the liability involved, although I hear that they can be repaired.

This does not seem to be my problem. Last trip out I was in a site for two days and found the tire to be near flat before leaving. I aired it up and drove 500 miles over the next two days. I checked it at every stop and it was holding pressure. The next morning after we got home it was flat again. Aired it up, have not moved the Montana, this being over a week ago and the tire is still up and holding pressure.

I talked to a tire shop today and I was told the aluminum wheels are noted for forming corrosion on the rim. The only solution was to have the wheels sand blasted clean and reseat the tire. There was no guarantee it would hold after that. His recommendation was to replace them with steel wheels.

If you still have the OEM rubber stems that may be a problem as all 4 of mine leaked. I like the aluminum wheels but the OEM ones on the Montana are"cost effective" so I went with the steel wheels..When these get bad looking I will purchase a High Quality set of aluminum wheels.

Hi Charlie, Suggests something amiss with the bead area of the rim. Just a guess but seems running down the road aggravates the issue then parking it leaves the bead displaced allowing air to leak out. If I were you I would have that tire removed an very closely inspect the bead seat for scratch or something that is partially across that area...refilling the air may push the tire out against the rim allowing it to maintain pressure...moving the trailer must push the bead to a compromised location and very slowly you loose pressure but only on parking...total speculation here but maybe someone else has better theory.

Charlie,
It could be corrosion at the bead but it could also have developed a crack in the valve stem area. I had one like that 3 months ago. I called Tredit tire and wheel and they shipped me a new wheel free. I can't find their number right now, if someone else doesn't have it I will look again and see if i can find it

Or spray valve stem/suspected area with soapy water.

From looking at the year of your coach I would say that you are another person with a crack in the rim. Keystone replaced all 4 of mine. Steves has also replaced his. And a few others have gone through Tredit and had theirs replaced.

I notice a few times when I backed-in that the tires had a lot of torque on them. My driveway is a nightmare to back into. Luckily I have good neighbors and I pull across the street into theirs several times to make sure the tires are square to the frame. I'm not saying this could be the problem, but hey, won't hurt to keep it straight.

Semper Fi!

Thanks for all the info, especially Larry's, good for a laugh.....Don't know what would happen when the flat spot hits bottom again????? I checked the tire this afternoon and it has lost 4# in ten days, not a huge leak. I contacted Tredit Tire & Wheel and they gave me instructions how to treat this. Thanks Glen for the phone number.

They told me to have the tire removed and inspect the wheel. If there appears to be problem with the wheel obtain a written statement from the tire shop about it's condition and send it to them. A replacement wheel would be sent out and the original to be returned to them for inspection. What I did not know is these wheels have life time replacement warranty for failures.

Great news......pulled the tire today and found a leaking valve stem. The valve core was also leaking. Appears that it would leak more depending upon how the tire was sitting. It's amazing that it could go down over night on the road, but yet sitting here at the stick house it leaked off ony 15# in two weeks.
