2006 Montana 3500RL Water Heater
My 2006 Montana 3500RL has a Surburban Hot Water Heater, and I was wondering if one of you guys could help me out with a question? Well, there is a off/on switch in the outdoor housing...is that for running the heater on electric only...or what is it for? Is this water heater 2-way...where you can run it on electric or gas or both, or is it just propane? I have a switch inside that turns red when you turn it on but not sure what the on/off switch is for outside. It was off but today, I turned it on...not sure what it is running off of ;-( I read the manual...but it doesn't give too much information. Anyone that can help please reply. I rather just use electric if the unit is designed to do that. My last unit was 2-way, and didn't have the electronic ignitor like this one has so you knew which mode it was in. Thanks in advance for your help!!! Allison

If it's like my 2955 that switch in the outdoor housing area is to turn on the electric element of the unit. The one inside is to light the gas burner. I was told, and I don't know this to be true that if you run it with both it recovers faster. I usually only use mine in the gas mode.

So, if you have the outdoor switch in the "On" position, does that mean the heater is on electric mode (and heating the water) until you turn it off?...and you don't have to turn on the switch on the inside to activate the propane unless you want both modes running?

Hi Allison,
That off/on switch in the outdoor housing would be for the electrical heating element.
Make sure you don't turn it on when there is no water in the hot water tank.
It will burn out the heating element in seconds if you do.
Ours works great on electricity, just have to make sure it is turned off and the pin is put back in the switch
when finished for the weekend.

J & D, I'm full-timing in the unit....so can just leave it on all the time? Also, there will always be water in the tank unless I'm draining it (which wouldn't be until late summer). This should be my last question...I appreciate your help!

Hi Allison again,
You are right, you can turn them both on or just the one on that you want to use.
If there is not much electrical power around, and maybe you want to use the A/C, we will
run the water heater on propane. If you are camping & paying for electricity why use your
propane to heat water? If you have lots of electrical power.
