Regarding towing in the fast or car pool lane, Back when I had a pop up trailer (way back ), I was once towing in the number two lane (lane next to fast lane) in a area where there were four lanes. A CHP pulled up next to me and yelled at me over the loud speaker to pull over and stay in the right two lanes when towing. So they do watch (didn't actually pull me over though).

You have to remember that there is a lot more traffic and they believe that open safe spot you leave in front of you belongs to them to swirve into. I have driven and lived in California for 50 years and you can safely pull a trailer with out worrying about a ticket in the low 60's one thing about driving in California with in a two hour period you can go from mountainous driving in the sierras to big city driving in San Francisco

The most logical reason I have heard, was that trailer tires are not rated for speeds over 55 mph. The CHP can't pull everyone over to check the tires, so it was probably voted in because you don't know who have or do not have high speed rated tires. Easier to generalize all trailers. We have all seen the recaps and strips of tires along the roadside. Think of China Bombs, lol. Happy trails all.

Don't know why or even care that some states have restricted towing speeds. I set the tow/haul mode on, engine breaking on and cruise control to 58 - 60 mph and relax. The key word is relax. We all got into RVing to relax, not to see how fast we can get from A to B. Our road trips are a journey not just a destination. Sit back, relax, enjoy the sights and let the "civilians" fly down the road.

California has had that 55mph when towing since before I was a young sailor back in 1964. At today's speeds, especially heading across the California desert, it really bothers me that when I pull out to pass a truck, that car that was way down the road in my mirror is suddenly on top of me and angry that I caused him to slow down. I live in Arizona and I feel safer being able to run with, or close, to the flow of traffic.

Special Trailer (ST) Tire Speed Ratings: Industry standards dictate tires with the ST designation are speed rated to 65 MPH (104 km/h) under normal inflation and load conditions.

If you read the signs carefully, anything with 3 axles is limited to 55mph in California.

Goodyear G614 RST tires are rated up to 75mph.

....and believe it or not, for awhile there was a special service bulletin on their Marathon ST tires that stated if you inflated them to 90psi cold inflation (10psi over the sidewall marking of 80psi), that they too were good up to 75mph. They did rescind that bulletin later though. I ran my Marathons at 90psi and put close to 25,000 on them before I changed them due to age, tread was fine. I still kept them 65mph and under as a rule, and only did very brief spurts up to 75mph a few times.

G614s are only rated for 75 MPH. That is the reason I don't use them. Well really I don't need than. My camper only weighs 9200 pounds dry weight.

As Lynwood said...G614 are the only ones rated for 75 mph. I have G614 and would never run at 75 mph, I just like the extra safety margin they provide.

I may be missing the gist of your comment. However, if you are feeling pushed by that 15,000 pound trailer behind you, you don't have your brakes set properly. I have never, I repeat never felt pushed by the Montana behind me. The trailer brakes stop the trailer-as they should and don't "push" my truck. Before anyone jumps all over me for being an over-confident tower, I've never been even close to a near miss or a situation where I didn't think I could stop in time. Towing at 55 MPH or heaven forbid 70-80 MPH, shouldn't matter if you are aware of your surroundings and plan for your "out" as we were all taught in driver's training-whether towing or not.

I'll step off the soapbox now.
Right! This what the trailer brakes are for...

The 55MPH is all about safety. Illinois was 55 for anything over 4 tons everywhere, trailer or not. That changes a couple years ago to anything over 4 tons except buses are 60 except in the 6 county area around Chicago which reverts to 55 mostly but 60 in a lot of places. Also, if more than 2 lanes each direction, the 2 right lane restriction applies.

Personally, my 1 tom dually is over 4 tons and with the 4:30 rear ends, 60 is 2K RPM and is just a touch faster than optimum for fuel mileage. I run 60 with that truck towing or not. It's about being relaxed when you get there. Let the world go by faster if they want. I prefer to enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

I drive at what the law allows plus a little where I think it's safe. On I 80 in Wyoming or such roads, whatever the law allows around big city or any crowded area that might be way under the speed limit.

Not any longer. The Carlisle tires I had installed on my Cougar were rated to 75 and there are others as well. I generally run 65 and may touch 70 while passing only. Not sure to what or when I'll change tires on the Montana yet. Sailun have developed a better rep than the G614 so leaning in that direction.

I like to run between 60 and 62 seems to be the sweet spot for the Duramax. My fuel economy drops quickly if I run much over that As for these crazies going 80 MPH and then cutting in front of other cars and slowing down its an every day experience on I 95 and I 81 here in the East.

No Ca has had the 55 law for many years I don't know when it started but when I moved there is 1965 that was the law.

I am no longer a CA resident moved to AZ in 2008 sold the CA home in 2014.

My business is in CA so I do have the honor of paying both CA and AZ income tax..
